Some Optimal Dividends Problems [PDF]

open access: yesASTIN Bulletin, 2004
We consider a situation originally discussed by De Finetti (1957) in which a surplus process is modified by the introduction of a constant dividend barrier. We extend some known results relating to the distribution of the present value of dividend payments until ruin in the classical risk model and show how a discrete time risk model can be used to ...

Analysing the significance of small conformational changes and low occupancy states in serial crystallographic data

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This protocol paper outlines methods to establish the success of a time‐resolved serial crystallographic experiment, by means of statistical analysis of timepoint data in reciprocal space and models in real space. We show how to amplify the signal from excited states to visualise structural changes in successful experiments.

Modification of the random search method

open access: yesТехнічна інженерія, 2020
The paper considers linear programming problems with Boolean variables. This is a part of mathematical programming focused on solving practical optimization problems, which could be solved and correctly described with a mathematical model of the problem ...

A Numerical Approach for Solving Nonlinear Optimal Control Problems Using the Hybrid Scheme of Fitness Dependent Optimizer and Bernstein Polynomials

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2022
In this paper, a heuristic scheme based on the hybridization of Bernstein Polynomials (BPs) and nature-inspired optimization techniques is presented to achieve the numerical solution of Nonlinear Optimal Control Problems (NOCPs) efficiently. The solution

The skills required for transition to university and study in biological sciences: A student perspective

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Bioscience students were asked for their opinions on the value and teaching of skills. 204 responded that teamwork, time management and study skills are necessary to reach University, that scientific writing, research, laboratory and presentation skills are taught effectively during their studies, while other skills are gained inherently through study ...

Numerical solution of the age structure optimization problem for basic types of power plants [PDF]

open access: yesYugoslav Journal of Operations Research, 2019
Our paper addresses an integral model of the large electric power system optimal development. The model takes into account the age structure of the main equipment, which is divided into several types regarding its technical characteristics.

Recovering the Optimal Solution by Dual Random Projection [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Random projection has been widely used in data classification. It maps high-dimensional data into a low-dimensional subspace in order to reduce the computational cost in solving the related optimization problem.

One size does not fit all: An in vitro evaluation of the effects of bezafibrate and medroxyprogesterone acetate on human SH‐SY5Y and U‐87 MG cancer cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Drugs previously repurposed to target blood cancers reduced neuroblastoma and glioblastoma cell growth and viability. However, their levels of anticancer activity were different and their clinical application may be problematic due to side effects at effective doses.

Re‐Awakening Public Attention to the Silent Pandemic of Cancer Among Older Adults in Low‐ and Middle‐Income Countries

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT As global populations age, cancer is increasingly becoming a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among older adults, particularly in low‐ and middle‐income countries (LMICs). Despite accounting for the majority of new cancer cases and deaths, older individuals remain underrepresented in cancer research, clinical guidelines, and health ...
