The foregoing case is an example of amyloidosis in which biopsy of a hemorrhagic vesicle on the buccal mucosa established the diagnosis. Once the diagnosis was made, the patient's cardiomyopathy, nephrotic syndrome, hepatomegaly, GI hemorrhage, hematuria, and oral lesions readily were explained.

The incidence of oral anticoagulation-associated intracerebral hemorrhage (OAC-ICH) is growing due to the increasing use of warfarin and the older age of treated patients. Recent population studies reveal that OAC-ICH currently occurs at a frequency comparable to that of subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Thrombocythemia as a cause of oral hemorrhage

Thrombocythemia is characterized by an increase in platelet numbers coupled with abnormal function. Three cases diagnosed after referral to an oral surgeon are presented. In each case the reason for referral concerned excessive dental hemorrhage. Thrombocythemia should be included in the differential diagnosis in cases of oral hemorrhage.
