Hypoglycemic Coma in a Hemodialysis Patient Receiving Blood Glucose-Lowering Therapy With the Single Agent Teneligliptin

open access: yesClinical Medicine Insights: Case Reports, 2018
Blood glucose management in patients undergoing dialysis is clinically challenging. In this population, most conventional oral hypoglycemic agents are contraindicated, especially from the perspective of pharmacokinetics. Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors

Repeated Intake of Grapefruit Juice Inhibits CYP2B6, CYP2C9, CYP2C19, and CYP3A4 while Lingonberry Powder Does Not Induce Major CYP Enzymes in Humans

open access: yesClinical Pharmacology &Therapeutics, EarlyView.
Grapefruit juice is a well‐established inhibitor of cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A4, but its effects on other CYP enzymes or organic anion transporting polypeptides (OATPs) are not fully characterized in humans. Recently, lingonberry powder was shown to induce murine CYP enzymes. We investigated the effects of lingonberry powder and grapefruit juice on seven

Severity of effect considerations regarding the use of mutation as a toxicological endpoint for risk assessment: A report from the 8th International Workshop on Genotoxicity Testing (IWGT)

open access: yesEnvironmental and Molecular Mutagenesis, EarlyView.
Abstract Exposure levels without appreciable human health risk may be determined by dividing a point of departure on a dose–response curve (e.g., benchmark dose) by a composite adjustment factor (AF). An “effect severity” AF (ESAF) is employed in some regulatory contexts.

Antioxidant Activity and Inhibition of Carbohydrate Hydrolyzing Enzymes by Underutilized Parts From Some Plant‐Based Foods and Their Effect on Postprandial Hyperglycemia

open access: yesFood Chemistry International, EarlyView.
The underutilized parts viz: pawpaw seed, banana, plantain, and potato peels showed promising antioxidant and inhibition of α‐amylase and α‐glucosidase activities (IC50 values ≤ 100 μg/mL). Similarly, pawpaw seed, banana, plantain, and potato peels reduced postprandial hyperglycemia in sucrose‐ and maltose‐induced hyperglycemia in rats.
