The global introduction of inactivated polio vaccine can circumvent the oral polio vaccine paradox
This literature review identifies the factors that influence the decision to introduce inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) in developing countries as opposed to the policy of vaccine cessation. Attenuated viruses in the oral polio vaccine (OPV) can replicate, revert to neurovirulence and become transmissible circulating vaccine-derived polioviruses (cVDPVs)

Spatial Analyses of Oral Polio Vaccine Transmission in an Community Vaccinated With Inactivated Polio Vaccine [PDF]
Understanding the spatial dynamics of oral polio vaccine (OPV) transmission will improve resource targeting. Mexico provides a natural laboratory, as it uses inactivated polio vaccine routinely as well as OPV bi-annually.Using geospatial maps, we measured the distance and density of OPV vaccinees' shedding in the areas nearest to unvaccinated ...

Capsid and RNA stabilisation of the oral polio vaccine
Vaccine, 2001The oral polio vaccine is the least stable vaccine of the common childhood vaccines. Two different inactivation mechanisms are responsible for the thermolability of the vaccine, i.e. denaturation of the viral capsid and degradation of the viral RNA within the capsid. Pirodavir, a capsid-binding compound, inhibits the viral capsid thermodenaturation. In

SEROLOGIC RESPONSE TO ORAL POLIO VACCINE AND ENHANCED-POTENCY INACTIVATED POLIO VACCINES
American Journal of Epidemiology, 1988In a randomized, controlled trial carried out from November 1980 to July 1983 involving 1,114 infants in Baltimore City and in Baltimore and Prince George's counties, Maryland, the serologic response to three doses of two enhanced-potency inactivated polio vaccines was compared with the response to three doses of oral polio vaccine.

Stability of oral polio vaccine at different temperatures
Vaccine, 1988The stability of five batches of oral polio vaccine stored at -20, 4-8, 22 and 36 degrees C for 7, 14 and 21 days was studied. The virus titrations were performed by the standard macro-method. There was little loss in virus titre when samples were kept at -20 and 4-8 degrees C for 21 days, whereas the samples exposed to 36 degrees C for 21 days showed ...

Disposing of Excess Vaccines After the Withdrawal of Oral Polio Vaccine [PDF]
Until recently, waste management for national immunization programs was limited to sharps waste, empty vaccine vials, or vaccines that had expired or were no longer usable. However, because wild-type 2 poliovirus has been eradicated, the World Health Organization's (WHO's) Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization deemed that all countries ...

Molecular Analyses of Oral Polio Vaccine Samples
Science, 2001It has been suggested that the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and thus the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) it causes, was inadvertently introduced to humans by the use of an oral polio vaccine (OPV) during a vaccination campaign launched by the Wistar Institute, Philadelphia, PA, USA, in the Belgian Congo in 1958 and 1959.

Use of oral polio vaccine for polio eradication.
Journal of the Indian Medical Association, 2006The experience in three of the world's six WHO Regions (the Americas, the European and the Western Pacific Regions) shows that OPV is the right choice for stopping wild poliovirus transmission. Polio can be eradicated by carrying out SIAs to supplement routine vaccination and by placing added emphasis on reaching every child during every polio round ...

Sero-conversion after oral polio vaccine
Indian Journal of Pediatrics, 1978Seventy eight paired sera were studied for sero-conversion after oral polio vaccine, in children belonging to the age group 3 months to 3 years. Sero-conversion was highest i.e. 92 3 percent for polio virus 2, 83.3 percent for polio virus 3 and 57.6 per cent for polio virus.
