Spin and Charge Control of Topological End States in Chiral Graphene Nanoribbons on a 2D Ferromagnet

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Chiral graphene nanoribbons on a ferromagnetic gadolinium‐gold surface alloy display tunable spin and charge states at their termini. Atomic work function variations and exchange fields enabe transitions between singlet, doublet, and triplet configurations.

REDUCING PICKER BLOCKING IN A HIGH-LEVEL NARROW-AISLE ORDER PICKING SYSTEM

open access: yes, 2018
New market developments force warehouses to handle a large number of orders within short time windows. Although research optimizing storage assignment and picker routing is extensive, there remains a gap between academic research and practice.

Resolving the Structural Duality of Graphene Grain Boundaries

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Cantilever ncAFM resolves the atomic structure of grain boundaries in graphene, revealing coexisting stable and metastable types. Both contain pentagon/heptagon defects, but metastable GBs show irregular geometries. Modeling shows metastable GBs form under compression, exhibiting vertical corrugation, while stable GBs are flat.

Defining a Storage-assignment Strategy for Precedence-constrained Order Picking

open access: yesOperations Research and Decisions, 2021
A zero-one quadratic assignment model has been proposed for dealing with the storage location assignment problem when there are weight constraints. Our analysis shows that operations can be improved using our model.

Tough, Ductile, and Strong Hard‐Soft Cementitious Composite Enabled by Multi‐Material Additive Manufacturing

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Drawing inspiration from the layered hard‐soft architecture found in sea sponges, this work establishes a new framework for architected cementitious composites (ACC) through multi‐material additive manufacturing (MMAM) process. The integration of mortar and elastomer phases into layered architectures enables synergistic toughening mechanisms, including

Metaheuristics for Order Batching and Sequencing in Manual Order Picking Systems [PDF]

open access: yes
Order picking deals with the retrieval of articles from their storage locations in order to satisfy customer requests. A major issue in manual order picking systems concerns of the transformation and consolidation of customer orders into picking orders ...

Ultra‐Confinement of Polaritons in Single Atomic Layer Ag Photonic Quantum Dots

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Strong confinement of surface phonon polaritons of silicon carbide was achieved in photonic quantum dots fabricated from van der Waals heterostructure of epitaxial graphene over single‐atomic layer silver. Scattering‐type scanning near‐field optical microscopy combined with an analytical approach, developed to reveal local propagation constants with ...

Algorithms for On-line Order Batching in an Order-Picking Warehouse [PDF]

open access: yes
In manual order picking systems, order pickers walk or ride through a distribution warehouse in order to collect items required by (internal or external) customers.

Measuring the Hall Effect in Hysteretic Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The authors highlight common pitfalls in measuring the Hall effect: in hysteretic magnets, improper data processing can create signals that look exotic but are not real. This Perspective explains the origin of these artifacts and presents practical measurement strategies that help researchers identify reliable Hall responses in complex magnetic ...

Comparison of Several Linear Ordering Methods for Selection of Locations in Order‑picking by Means of the Simulation Methods

open access: yesActa Universitatis Lodziensis. Folia Oeconomica, 2018
When a company uses a shared storage system, selection of locations during the order‑picking process is not an obvious task. Every location where the picked product is placed, can be described by means of several variables, such as: storage time ...
