SummaryOrf virus (ORFV) is an important pathogen responsible for a highly contagious zoonotic viral infection that threatens those who handle sheep and goats. Orf virus is the prototype of the Parapoxvirus genus, and its resilience in the environment and ability to reinfect its host has contributed to the spread and maintenance of the infection in many

Ocular Infection with Orf Virus
American Journal of Ophthalmology, 1984Orf virus infection of the pericanthal eyelid skin and conjunctiva was diagnosed by electron microscopy. Orf is a paravaccinia virus responsible for contagious pustular dermatitis in sheep and goats. It occasionally affects humans. The patient was a farmwife who had recently handled lambs.

Abstract Three methods can be used to show that both upper and lower surfaces of orf virus particles are seen in sodium phosphotungstate-stained electron micrographs. These have demonstrated that the characteristic tubular thread structure of the wall of the particle is in the form of a left-hand spiral coil of a single thread.

Tissue culture‐propagated orf virus vaccine protects lambs from orf virus challenge
Veterinary Record, 1996Twenty, eight‐day‐old specific pathogen‐free (SPF) lambs were vaccinated by a single scarification approximately 4 cm in length on the inner right thigh with a double‐pronged applicator. The titre of live virus in the vaccine was 10 7.2 TCID 50 /ml and ...

Erythema multiforme after orf virus infection
Pediatric Dermatology, 2018AbstractThe case of a 6‐year‐old boy with multiple, target‐shaped lesions and a crusted nodule on his right index finger is presented. Based on clinical findings and the patient's recent contact with sheep and goats, a diagnosis of orf disease associated with erythema multiforme was suspected.

Gene homology between orf virus and smallpox variola virus
Virus Genes, 1996About 47% identity was observed between the deduced amino acid sequences of a protein encoded by a gene of the parapoxvirus orf virus (OV) strain NZ2 and a 6 kDa protein of unknown function reported to be produced by an open reading frame expressed early after infection by the orthopoxvirus Western Reserve vaccinia virus (VAC); the open reading frame ...

Recent advances in diagnostic approaches for orf virus
Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology, 2023Orf virus (ORFV), the prototype species of the Parapoxvirus genus, is an important zoonotic virus, causing great economic losses in livestock production. At present, there are no effective drugs for orf treatment. Therefore, it is crucial to develop accurate and rapid diagnostic approaches for ORFV.
