Sources of nitrogen for winter wheat in organic cropping systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
In organic cropping systems, legumes, cover crops, residue incorporation, and manure application are used to maintain soil fertility, but the contributions of these management practices to soil nitrogen (N) supply remain obscure.

Amphiphilic Nanographene With Aggregation‐Induced Type‐I Photodynamic Properties

open access: yesAggregate
Fluorescent graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have emerged as promising phototheranostic agents. However, most of the reported GQDs only show Type‐II photodynamic (PD) effect, which is not effective in the hypoxic tumor interior. Moreover, little is known yet

Heterozygous loss‐of‐function alleles associate the conserved 3′‐5′ exoribonuclease EXOSC10 with hypersensitivity to the anticancer drug 5‐fluorouracil

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
EXOSC10, an essential nuclear RNA exosome‐associated 3′‐5′ exoribonuclease, is inhibited by the anticancer drug 5‐fluorouracil (5‐FU), and EXOSC10 depletion increases 5‐FU sensitivity. The colon‐cancer variant EXOSC10S402T, located in a proteolysis motif, is stable and nuclear but nonfunctional in vivo.

Organic farming without fossil fuels - life cycle assessment of two Swedish cases [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Organic agriculture is dependent on fossil fuels, just like conventional agriculture, but this can be reduced by the use of on-farm biomass resources. The energy efficiency and environmental impacts of different alternatives can be assessed by life cycle

Challenges in modelling dissolved organic matter dynamics in agricultural soil using DAISY [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Because dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays an important role is terrestrial C-,N-and P-balances and transport of these three components to aquatic environments, there is a need to include it in models.

ZW4864‐mediated inhibition of the β‐catenin/BCL9/BCL9L complex reveals therapeutic potential in bladder cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
BCL9 and BCL9L drive bladder cancer progression by enhancing β‐catenin signaling, promoting proliferation, migration, invasion, and organoid growth. Genetic depletion of BCL9(L) suppresses malignant phenotypes, while pharmacological disruption of the β‐catenin/BCL9(L) complex with ZW4864 inhibits canonical Wnt signaling and tumor‐associated cellular ...

Synergies between conventional soil organic carbon, farm productivity, soil sequestration and soil carbon market risk in Australia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The investment risk of sequestering carbon as soil organic carbon (SOC) is low when compared to the susceptibility of forestry sequestration projects to disease, bushfires and droughts over a 100-year investment timeframe.

The H/C Molar Ratio and Its Potential Pitfalls for Determining Biochar's Permanence

open access: yesGCB Bioenergy
Biochar carbon removal (BCR) is widely recognized as a globally feasible technique for removing CO2 from the atmosphere and storing carbon in a stable form within the environment.

Long‐term hippocampal alterations and cognitive impairment in a murine model of surgical sepsis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Using a mouse model of surgical sepsis, we tested long‐term memory and analyzed the transcriptome of single cells isolated from the hippocampus. Survivor mice showed worse memory, loss of certain brain cell subpopulations, and abnormal immune cell activity—suggesting that post‐sepsis brain alterations may be linked to cognitive deficits.

Silurian and Devonian source rocks and crude oils from the western part of Libya: Organic geochemistry, palynology and carbon stratigraphy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The Early Silurian “hot” shales and Late Devonian black shales are major regional oil and gas source rocks in North Africa. Their deposition probably played a major role in global carbon cycling in general because of the large areas of the ocean affected.
