Removal of disinfection by-product precursors by coagulation and an innovative suspended ion exchange process [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
This investigation aimed to compare the disinfection by-product formation potentials (DBPFPs) of three UK surface waters (1 upland reservoir and 2 lowland rivers) with differing characteristics treated by (a) a full scale conventional process and (b ...

Cutaneous Melanoma Drives Metabolic Changes in the Aged Bone Marrow Immune Microenvironment

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, increasingly affects older adults. Our study reveals that melanoma induces changes in iron and lipid levels in the bone marrow, impacting immune cell populations and increasing susceptibility to ferroptosis.

Carbon, light organic matter and oxidizable organic carbon fractions

open access: yesComunicata Scientiae, 2010

The Aging Blood: Cellular Origins, Circulating Drivers, and Therapeutic Potential

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
As a conduit linking all organs, the blood system both reflects and actively drives systemic aging. This review highlights how circulating pro‐aging and antiaging factors and age‐associated hematopoietic stem cell dysfunction contribute to immunosenescence and multi‐organ decline, positioning the hematopoietic system as a target for aging intervention.

Impacts of elevated atmospheric ozone on peatland below-ground DOC characteristics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Rising concentrations of tropospheric ozone are having detrimental impacts on the growth of crop and forest species and some studies have reported inhibition of the allocation of carbon below ground.

Development of a Personalized Visualization and Analysis Tool to Improve Clinical Care in Complex Multisystem Diseases With Application to Scleroderma

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective In complex diseases, it is challenging to assess a patient's disease state, trajectory, treatment exposures, and risk of multiple outcomes simultaneously, efficiently, and at the point of care. Methods We developed an interactive patient‐level data visualization and analysis tool (VAT) that automates illustration of the trajectory of a ...

Nitrous oxide emissions in Fe-modified biochar amended paddy soil are controlled by autotrophic nitrification

open access: yesGeoderma
We investigated the potential of ferric iron-modified biochar to lessen autotrophic nitrification and lower nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions in paddy soils.

Issues Related to Incorporating Northern Peatlands into Global Climate Models [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Northern peatlands cover ~3–4 million km2 (~10% of the land north of 45°N) and contain ~200–400 Pg carbon (~10–20% of total global soil carbon), almost entirely as peat (organic soil).
