Valorisation of lignin – Achievements of the LignoValue project [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Lignocellulosic biorefinery for production of biofuels, materials and chemicals requires valorization of all fractions including lignin. As a consequence of its poly-aromatic structure, lignin potentially serves as a source for aromatic chemicals.

Pretreatment of Wheat Straw by Liquid Hot Water and Organosolv Processes

open access: yesChemical Engineering Transactions, 2012
Wheat straw was subjected to liquid hot water (LHW) and ethanol organosolv (EOS) pretreatment in order to find optimum treatment conditions. The results were then used further to quantify the influence of the utilization of ethanol in the treatment liquor on the sugar and lignin yields. The data was collected in two experimental works (the one LHW, the

A Bibliometric Review and Visualization of Research Progress in Computational Modeling for Biofuels

open access: yesApplied Research, Volume 5, Issue 5, October 2026.
This bibliometric mapping of biomass‐to‐biofuel computational modeling research (2003–2025) traces the field's rapid growth, key contributors, and international collaboration networks, revealing a decisive shift toward multiscale, hybrid, and AI‐enabled modeling as the field's next frontier for sustainable biofuel production. ABSTRACT The conversion of

Direct Precipitation of Organosolv Liquors Leading to Submicron Lignin Particles

open access: yesChemical Engineering Transactions, 2018
Micro- and nanosize lignin has recently gained interest due to improved properties compared to standard lignin available today. As the second most abundant biopolymer after cellulose, lignin is readily available but used for rather low-value applications.

Almond Shell‐Derived Cellulosic Microfibres: Extraction, Characterisation and Applications in Sustainable Paper‐Based Packaging

open access: yesPackaging Technology and Science, Volume 39, Issue 10, Page 1231-1251, October 2026.
Cellulosic microfibres were extracted from almond shells using organosolv, soda and kraft processes, and comprehensive physicochemical, surface, thermal and morphological characterisation demonstrated their strong potential as sustainable fillers for paper‐based packaging application. ABSTRACT This study develops pathways for the valorisation of almond

Microwave‐Assisted Subcritical Water Extraction Method for the Optimized Isolation of Cellulose From Residual Soybean Hulls

open access: yesChemSusChem, Volume 19, Issue 17, 14 September 2026.
Almost pure cellulose was extracted from soybean hulls by microwave‐assisted alkaline treatment (MW‐NaOH) and characterized. The microwave‐assisted subcritical water extraction (MASWE) of waste biomass falls within the circular economy approach, promotes sustainability, and reduces both treatment times and the use of harsh chemicals.

Organosolv Fractionation of Softwood Biomass for Biofuel and Biorefinery Applications

open access: yesEnergies, 2017
Softwoods represent a significant fraction of the available lignocellulosic biomass for conversion into a variety of bio-based products. Its inherent recalcitrance, however, makes its successful utilization an ongoing challenge.

Advancements and Challenges in Second‐ and Third‐Generation Biofuels: A Comparative Analysis of Lignocellulosic and Algal Feedstocks

open access: yesSafety Science and Technology, Volume 1, Issue 3, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Advanced biofuels derived from nonfood biomass are increasingly recognized as strategic components of low‐carbon energy systems, particularly for sectors where direct electrification remains difficult. Second‐generation biofuels from lignocellulosic residues and third‐generation biofuels from algal and aquatic biomass offer complementary ...

Tunable Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents‐Driven Fractionation of Olive Pomace in an Integrated Biorefinery: Linking Lignin Structural Tailoring to Carbohydrate Valorization and Biopolymer Production

open access: yesChemSusChem, Volume 19, Issue 13, 14 July 2026.
Microwave‐conditioned olive pomace was fractionated with deep eutectic solvents (DESs) spanning acidic, neutral, alkaline, and chemo‐enzymatic regimes. The alkaline DES provided the best balance between delignification and carbohydrate preservation, yielding a fermentable glucose/xylose stream suitable for Haloferax mediterranei fermentation and poly(3‐
