Topological defects in two-dimensional orientation-field models for grain growth. [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review E, 2017
Standard two-dimensional orientation-field-based phase-field models rely on a continuous scalar field to represent crystallographic orientation. The corresponding order parameter space is the unit circle, which is not simply connected.

Self-assembly of highly sensitive 3D magnetic field vector angular encoders

open access: yesScience Advances, 2019
3D self-assembly advances parallel wafer-scale manufacturing of vector field devices such as 3D magnetic field angular encoders. Novel robotic, bioelectronic, and diagnostic systems require a variety of compact and high-performance sensors.

On the probability distribution function of small-scale interplanetary magnetic field fluctuations [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales Geophysicae, 2004
In spite of a large number of papers dedicated to the study of MHD turbulence in the solar wind there are still some simple questions which have never been sufficiently addressed, such as: a) Do we really know how the magnetic field vector ...

Diffusion‐based size determination of solute particles: a method adapted for postsynaptic proteins

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We present a diffusion‐based approach for measuring the size of macromolecules and their complexes, and demonstrate its use on postsynaptic proteins. The method requires fluorescein‐labelled protein samples, a microfluidic device that maintains laminar flow for said samples, a microscope recording the emitted fluorescent signals, and an analytic ...

On-Orbit Calibration Method for Rotation Axis Misalignment in Rotating Mirror-Based Wide-Field Space Cameras

open access: yesRemote Sensing
Rotating mirror-based space cameras are susceptible to mirror misalignment due to the severe vibrations experienced during rocket launch and the harsh, variable conditions of the space environment, which can result in deviations of the camera’s line of ...

Ionic Fracture Fluid Leak-Off

open access: yesFluids, 2019
The study is motivated by monitoring the space orientation of a hydrolic fracture used in oil production. Streaming potential arises due to the leakage of ionic fracking fluid under the rock elastic forces which make the fracture disclosure disappear ...

Enhancing spin–orbit coupling in high-mobility graphene by introducing chiral space curvature

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2021
Graphene is an excellent two-dimensional materials with high-mobility and relativistic electronic linear dispersion. Its rich physical properties such as half-integer quantum Hall effect and device application potential have been continuously attracting ...

Unrolling of Syngonium podophyllum: Functional Anatomy, Morphology and Modelling of Its Peltate Leaves

open access: yesAdvanced Biology, EarlyView.
The unrolling of the peltate leaves in Syngonium podophyllum is analyzed and quantified (left‐hand side to center). These measurements serve to verify a mathematical model for leaf unrolling based on the model used in Schmidt (2007). An additional formula for obtaining a layer mismatch from a prescribed radius is derived.

POSE VERSUS STATE: ARE SENSOR POSITION AND ATTITUDE SUFFICIENT FOR MODERN PHOTOGRAMMETRY AND REMOTE SENSING? [PDF]

open access: yesThe International Archives of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences, 2014
We investigate the advantages of using what we call sensor state parameters or sensor state to describe the geometrical relationship between a sensor and the 3D space or the 4D time-space that extend the traditional image pose or orientation (position ...

Modified Rodrigues Parameters: An Efficient Representation of Orientation in 3D Vision and Graphics

open access: yesJournal of Mathematical Imaging and Vision, 2018
Modified Rodrigues parameters (MRPs) are triplets in $${\mathbb {R}}^3$$R3 bijectively and rationally mapped to quaternions through stereographic projection.
