Spatiotemporal Epidemiology of Oropouche Fever, Brazil, 2015-2024. [PDF]

We assessed the spatiotemporal dynamics of Oropouche fever in Brazil during 2015-2024. We found the number of cases substantially increased during that period, particularly in the Amazon region. Our findings underscore the need for improved surveillance and public health measures in response to the disease's potential spread beyond endemic areas.

To the Editor: Oropouche virus (OROV) is an arbovirus, Orthobunyavirus, transmitted among sloths, marsupials, primates, and birds by the mosquitoes Aedes serratus and Culex quinquefasciatus. Notably, this virus has adapted to an urban cycle involving man, with midges (Culicoides paraensis) as the main vector (1).

Reemergence of Oropouche Fever, Northern Brazil [PDF]

Oropouche fever has reemerged in Parauapebas and Porto de Moz municipalities, Pará State, Brazil. Serologic analysis (immunoglobulin M-ELISA) and virus isolation confirmed Oropouche virus (OROV) in both municipalities. Nucleotide sequencing of 2 OROV isolates from each location indicated genotypes I (Parauapebas) and II (Porto de Moz) in Brazil.
