The bread of Toledo: Prices and political economy, 1535–1800

open access: yesThe Economic History Review, EarlyView.
Abstract We study the market for common white bread in the city of Toledo through a new 266‐year‐long series of bread prices, obtained from the cash purchases and wholesale bread‐for‐wheat contracts of large institutions. Our data are strongly consistent with fragmentary evidence on retail price regulation, as well as with shorter series from other ...

Ion binding sites and intermediate domain closure induced by D‐serine in the GluD1 ligand‐binding domain

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
GluD1 belongs to the ionotropic glutamate receptors and has important functions in the brain and brain diseases. We report the crystal structure of the GluD1 ligand‐binding domain with D‐serine and zinc ions. MD simulations supported promiscuous binding of cations and that chloride ions play a stabilizing role. Pro725 seems to hinder interlobe closure,

Cassava: practices and technologies to improve food security in sub-Saharan Africa

open access: yesCogent Food & Agriculture
Orphan crops are underutilised and under researched crops. In many developing countries, these crops are essential for food, nutrition security, climate compliant and income generation. However, minimal resources and research time have been significantly

Trajectories of Care: Tracing the Social Genesis of Men's Participation in Low Paid Care Work

open access: yesGender, Work &Organization, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Drawing on a study involving 41 men employed as support workers in the Australia Health Care and Social Assistance (HCSA) sector, in this article we investigate where in their lives and how men turn to caring roles. Documenting continuities of men's caring practices in their work lives and private lives, we present a series of men's care ...

Plant cis‐regulatory grammar: Decoding the multidimensional code of transcriptional regulation for programmable crop engineering

open access: yesJournal of Integrative Plant Biology, EarlyView.
This review decodes the grammar of plant cis‐regulatory elements, revealing that their function emerges from sequence, chromatin accessibility, 3D topology, and cell type context. It highlights how single‐cell omics, CRISPR dissection, and AI‐driven design converge to enable predictive engineering and crop improvement. ABSTRACT Cis‐regulatory elements (

The Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST) and New Agrarian Questions in Brazil

open access: yesJournal of Agrarian Change, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The Landless Rural Workers Movement of Brazil (MST) primarily organized occupations of large‐scale farms, forcing the redistribution of land for creation of agrarian reform settlements. In the past 20 years, however, land occupations and the establishment of new agrarian reform settlements have consistently declined, while the MST shifted ...
