Syncope and orthostatic intolerance

Medical Clinics of North America, 2003
Syncope and orthostatic intolerance remain common and significant clinical problems with many undocumented, misdiagnosed, or cryptogenic cases. Careful clinical assessment and application of advancing laboratory support can further improve diagnosis and treatment.

Orthostatic Intolerance in Behcet's Disease

Autonomic Neuroscience, 2001
Neurological manifestations are known to occur in patients with Behcet's Disease (BD) and significantly affect the clinical course of the disease. Nevertheless, the prevalence, pattern and severity of autonomic impairment in such patients have yet to be defined. In this paper, we presented a BD patient with orthostatic tachycardia.

Cerebral Autoregulation in Orthostatic Intolerance

Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 2001
Abstract: Many of the primary symptoms of orthostatic intolerance (fatigue, diminished concentration) as well as some of the premonitory symptoms of neurally mediated syncope (NMS) are thought to be due to cerebral hypoperfusion. Transcranial Doppler measurements of middle cerebral artery blood velocity (CBV) is at present the only technique for ...

Orthostatic Intolerance and the Headache Patient

Seminars in Pediatric Neurology, 2010
Orthostatic intolerance (OI) refers to a group of clinical conditions, including postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) and neurally mediated hypotension (NMH), in which symptoms worsen with upright posture and are ameliorated by recumbence.

Orthostatic intolerance after spaceflight

Journal of Applied Physiology, 1996
Orthostatic intolerance occurs commonly after spaceflight, and important aspects of the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We studied 14 individuals supine and standing before and after three space shuttle missions of 9-14 days. After spaceflight, 9 of the 14 (64%) crew members could not complete a 10-min stand test that all completed preflight ...

Orthostatic intolerance and orthostatic tachycardia: A heterogeneous disorder

Clinical Autonomic Research, 1995
A series of autonomic function tests were performed in eight patients who had orthostatic intolerance and orthostatic tachycardia (> 36 bpm). All eight had an abnormal tilt-table test (mean tachycardia 50 bpm compared with 22 +/- 7 bpm in 31 normal subjects). Plasma volume was low in four out of six patients.

Orthostatic Intolerance

1993
Abstract A goal of the previous chapters was to explain how neural and humoral mechanisms of vascular and cardiac control keep blood pressure from falling during orthostasis. The goal of this chapter is to amplify the discussion of essential adjustments to orthostasis by showing what happens when a particular part of the control system ...

Acetylcholinesterase Inhibition in Patients With Orthostatic Intolerance

Journal of Clinical Neurophysiology, 2006
The efficacy of current therapeutic measures in orthostatic intolerance (OI) varies among patients and is oftentimes unsatisfactory. New approaches to alleviate symptoms of OI are therefore clearly needed. Recent reports have demonstrated that acetylcholinesterase inhibition is effective in the treatment of orthostatic hypotension with the presumed ...

Orthostatic Intolerance: A Disorder of Young Women

Obstetrical & Gynecological Survey, 2000
Orthostatic intolerance (OI) is a cause of significant disability in otherwise healthy women seen by gynecologists. Orthostatic tachycardia is often the most obvious hemodynamic abnormality found in OI patients, but symptoms may include dizziness, visual changes, discomfort in the head or neck, poor concentration, fatigue, palpitations, tremulousness ...
