ABSTRACT Cells of Dictyostelium discoideum known to release cyclic AMP (cAMP) rhythmically in the form of pulses, change with the same period of about 8 min the pH of their medium. The pH is used here as an indicator to investigate the effect of externally added cAMP pulses on the oscillations.

On the effect of circadian oscillations on biochemical cell signaling by NF−κB
Journal of Theoretical Biology, 2013We report the results of a numerical investigation of a mathematical model for NF-κB oscillations, described by a set of ordinary nonlinear differential equations, when perturbed by a circadian oscillation. The main result is that a circadian rhythm, even when it represents a weak perturbation, enhances the signaling capabilities of NF-κB oscillations.

Mechanical stimulation of a single cell induced a wave of increased [Ca2+]i that was communicated to surrounding cells. This was followed by asynchronous Ca2+ oscillations in some cells.
