A hypothesis on ergodicity and the signal‐to‐noise paradox

open access: yesAtmospheric Science Letters, Volume 25, Issue 11, November 2024.
This letter suggests ergodicity concerns may affect the signal‐to‐noise paradox in ensemble weather forecasting. For the ensemble mean to be our best forecast of observations, the ergodic theorem must hold, as this approach interprets the mean as the most likely phase‐space trajectory.

Persistent Summer North Atlantic Jet Variability: Dynamical Feedbacks and Model‐Observation Discrepancies

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 51, Issue 20, 28 October 2024.
Abstract Persistent fluctuations in the latitudinal position of the North Atlantic (NATL) jet stream are closely linked to extreme weather anomalies, particularly over Europe. Accurately representing jet stream persistence in climate models is essential for enhancing the reliability of future regional extreme weather projections.

The observed evolution of sub‐daily to multi‐day heavy precipitation in Switzerland

open access: yesAtmospheric Science Letters, Volume 25, Issue 9, September 2024.
Daily and multi‐day heavy precipitation intensity and frequency have increased since 1901, mainly driven by anthropogenic climate change. Heavy precipitation peaks in the 1980s and subsequently shows a decrease in daily to multi‐day heavy precipitation due to internal variability.

Clinical journey for patients with aortic regurgitation: A retrospective observational study from a multicenter database

open access: yesCatheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions, Volume 104, Issue 1, Page 145-154, July 1, 2024.
Abstract Background Data using real‐world assessments of aortic regurgitation (AR) severity to identify rates of Heart Valve Team evaluation and aortic valve replacement (AVR), as well as mortality among untreated patients, are lacking. The present study assessed these trends in care and outcomes for real‐world patients with documented AR.

Large Uncertainties When Diagnosing the “Eddy Feedback Parameter” and Its Role in the Signal‐To‐Noise Paradox

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 51, Issue 11, 16 June 2024.
Abstract A too‐weak eddy feedback in models has been proposed to explain the signal‐to‐noise paradox in seasonal‐to‐decadal forecasts of the winter Northern Hemisphere. We show that the “eddy feedback parameter” (EFP) used in previous studies is sensitive to sampling and multidecadal variability.

Increasing customer purchases at farmers markets using point‐of‐sale scanner data

open access: yesJournal of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association, Volume 3, Issue 1, Page 61-77, March 2024.
Abstract Until recently, lack of customer transaction data at farmers markets prevented strategic vendor decision making to increase customer purchases. We collect point‐of‐sale data on over 26,000 transactions in 2021 from 10 livestock farms at 22 farmers markets in New York State.

Verb generation for presurgical mapping: Gaining specificity

open access: yesJournal of Neuropsychology, Volume 18, Issue S1, Page 183-204, March 2024.
Abstract Verb generation is among the most frequently used tasks in presurgical mapping. Because this task involves many processes, the overall brain effects are not specific. While it is necessary to identify the whole network involving noun comprehension or semantic retrieval and lexical selection to produce the verb, isolation of those components is
