A Case of Acquired Pars Flaccida Cholesteatoma Extending to the Supralabyrinthine Petrous Apex With Preservation of the Otic Capsule. [PDF]
Background Supralabyrinthine petrous bone cholesteatoma is a rare subtype in which hearing preservation may be achievable depending on the anatomical extent and surgical approach. Appropriate selection of surgical strategy is essential. Case Presentation A 31‐year‐old man presented with a 2‐year history of persistent left otorrhea.

BackgroundThird window syndrome is a vestibular-cochlear disorder in humans in which a third mobile window of the otic capsule creates changes to the flow of sound pressure energy through the perilymph/endolymph.

Characteristics of the Facial Canal-Lateral Canal Dehiscence: The Under-recognized Third Window. [PDF]
Abstract Objective We aimed to establish normative data on the bony partition between the facial canal (FC) and the lateral semicircular canal (LSCC) and present our initial series of cases in which an FC‐LSCC dehiscence was identified based on these anatomic criteria, with or without other third window pathologies.

We conducted a prospective longitudinal study of two cohorts of patients who had superior semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome (SSCDS); one group had radiographically confirmed superior canal dehiscence (SCD), and the other exhibited no identified otic capsule dehiscence on imaging (no-iOCD).

AKT signaling mediates IGF-I survival actions on otic neural progenitors [PDF]
Background: Otic neurons and sensory cells derive from common progenitors whose transition into mature cells requires the coordination of cell survival, proliferation and differentiation programmes.

Facial nerve stimulation outcomes after cochlear implantation with cochlear-facial dehiscence
Objectives: To examine the occurrence of facial nerve stimulation (FNS) and outcomes in patients with cochlear-facial dehiscence (CFD) who underwent cochlear implantation (CI).

Audiovestibular Quantification in Rare Third Window Disorders in Children
Third window disorders are structural abnormalities in the bony otic capsule that establish a connection between the middle/inner ear or the inner ear/cranial cavity. Investigated extensively in adults, they have hardly been studied in children.

Prevalence of Cochlear-Facial Nerve Dehiscence and Facial Nerve Stimulation for Adult Cochlear Implant Recipients. [PDF]
This study found that a smaller cochlear‐facial nerve partition width (CFPW) and cochlear‐facial nerve dehiscence (CFD) significantly increase the risk of facial nerve stimulation (FNS) after cochlear implantation. CFD was identified in 3.2% of cases, with 70% of those experiencing FNS. Electrode array type did not significantly impact FNS in CFD cases.

Identification of Cellular Voids in the Human Otic Capsule
The otic capsule consists of dense highly mineralized compact bone. Inner ear osteoprotegerin (OPG) effectively inhibits perilabyrinthine remodeling and otic capsular bone turnover is very low compared to other bone.

An 8-year-old boy was referred to the ENT department for further evaluation of right-sided conductive hearing loss. A small cyst anterior to the oval window and fixation of the stapes footplate were observed during an exploratory tympanotomy.
