A computer simulation of the otolith membrane

Computers in Biology and Medicine, 1973
Abstract This paper describes a model of the otolith membrane of the macula utriculi. A thin elastic membrane with a fixed boundary closely matching the shape of the otolith membrane in man is used as the model. The distributed loading of the membrane reflects the characteristic otokonial ridge which together with the corresponding thickening in the

Proteins of the gelatinous layer of the trout saccular otolithic membrane

Hearing Research, 1990
Although the otolithic membrane is thought to play an important role in the stimulation of vestibular hair cells, little is known about its chemical composition. We analyzed proteins of the gelatinous layer of this structure from the trout saccule, a probable organ of hearing in fish, by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. A relatively small number

Incorporation of Radioactive Calcium into Otolithic Membranes of the Guinea Pig After Aminoglycoside Treatment

Acta Oto-Laryngologica, 1979
The influence of neomycin and streptomycin on the calcium metabolism of the otolithic membranes was investigated in the guinea pig. After chronic treatment with either drug, animals were injected intraperitoneally with radioactive calcium. Retention of calcium in the serum was unaffected by drug treatment, as was the incorporation of radioactivity into

[The utricular otolith membrane in the guinea pig].

Zhurnal evoliutsionnoi biokhimii i fiziologii, 1981
Several types of otoconia are present in the otolithic membrane of the utricle of fetal, young and adult guinea pigs. These include smooth, transitional and rough otoconia, and a few rhombohedrons. The smooth otoconia are nearly the same numeric fraction in all the specimens. The mean size of otoconia increases only during the course of gestation.

Incorporation Of Radioactive Calcium Into Otolithic Membranes And Middle Ear Ossicles Of The Gerbil

Acta Oto-Laryngologica, 1975
45CaCl2 was injected into gerbils in single or multiple doses, and the resulting radioactivity in serum, otoconial CaCO3, bone samples, and selected labyrinthine epithelium was determined by liquid scintillation spectrometry. Incorporation into both utricular and saccular otoconia occurred at the rate of 0.06-0.07 nmole Ca++ per day, corresponding to a

Correlated movement of hair bundles coupled to the otolithic membrane in the bullfrog sacculus

Hearing Research, 2009
High-speed imaging with a CMOS camera was used to track the motion of multiple hair bundles of the bullfrog sacculus. To maintain the natural degree of intercell coupling, the overlying otolithic membrane was left intact atop the in vitro preparation.

Structure of avian tectorial, otolithic, and cupular membranes.

The Physiologist, 1996
Any explanation of cochlear and vestibular micro-mechanics must include the contributions of the tectorial (TM), otholithic (OM), and cupular (CM) membranes. However, unresolved questions about the microarchitectures of these membranes and the types and number of attachments to their underlying sensory areas have hampered the development of micro ...

[Experimental study of streptomycin on 45Ca intake of otolithic membranes].

Zhonghua er bi yan hou ke za zhi, 1998
45CaCO3 was injected into guinea pigs, and the radioactivity in otolithic membranes of utriculi and sacculi, auditory ossicles and femora was determined by liquid scintillation spectrometry, to study the dynamic effect of streptomycin on calcium content of otolithic membranes, as a means to explore the mechanism of streptomycin ototoxicity. The results

Lectin binding sites in the inner ear membranes. A detailed analysis of the otolithic membranes

1987
FITC-labelled lectins with binding specificity to the hexose components of glycoconjugates were used to demonstrate structural difference in the glycoprotein composition of otolithic membranes and ampullar cupulae in chicken embryos, tadpoles and adult specimens of Rana esculenta.
