Ouabain as a Mammalian Hormone

Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 2003
Abstract: Endogenous ouabain changes rapidly in humans and dogs upon physical exercise and is under the control of epinephrine and angiotensin II. Hence, the steroid acts as a rapidly acting hormone. A search for a specific binding globulin for cardiac glycosides in bovine plasma resulted in the identification of the d allotype of the μ chain of IgM ...

Ouabain-like factor

Current Opinion in Nephrology and Hypertension, 1998
Accumulated evidence has suggested that several sodium pump inhibitors, similar to cardiotonic steroids, are present in the human body. Ouabain-like factor, the most appealing candidate, has been found to be increased with high sodium intake and hypervolaemia, and in essential hypertension, mineralocorticoid hypertension, and pregnancy-induced ...

Studies on the cardiotoxicity of ouabain

Canadian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology, 1969
Pretreatment with reserpine in a catecholamine-depleting dosage schedule greatly increased the arrhythmic and lethal dose of ouabain in cats. Pretreatment with reserpine immediately before the administration of ouabain also increased these doses significantly but the effect was less marked than that produced by 24-h pretreatment.

Mechanisms of ouabain toxicity

The FASEB Journal, 2003
The suggested involvement of ouabain in hypertension raised the need for a better understanding of its cellular action, but the mechanisms of ouabain toxicity are only now being uncovered. In the present study, we show that reduced glutathione (GSH) protected ouabain-sensitive (OS) cells from ouabain-induced toxicity and that the inhibition of GSH ...

Role of Ouabain-Like Factors in Hypertension

Journal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology, 1993
Several reports suggest the presence of sodium-potassium pump inhibitor in plasma and various tissues, particularly during volume-expanded state and low-renin hypertension. It has been hypothesized that by inhibiting the cardiovascular muscle-cell Na(+)-K+ pump, this inhibitor can constrict blood vessels, enhance vasoconstriction, and increase cardiac ...

Endogenous Ouabain in Ménière's Disease

Otology & Neurotology, 2010
Endogenous Ouabain (EO) has been demonstrated to modulate the activity of Na+, K+ -ATPase. Our purpose was to measure plasma levels of EO in Ménière's Disease (MD) subjects as a possible predisposing factor to developing and maintaining hydrops.Case-control study.University hospital.Thirty-nine MD subjects and 29 controls with a lifetime negative ...

Total Synthesis of Ouabagenin and Ouabain

Chemistry – An Asian Journal, 2008
AbstractAll done! A full account of the total synthesis of ouabagenin and ouabain has been described. The synthesis was achieved through a polyanionic cyclization strategy. Degradation studies provide an ultimate proof for a key intermediate observed in the synthesis.magnified imageA full account of the total synthesis of ouabagenin and ouabain is ...

Effect of ouabain on Sindbis virus replication in ouabain-sensitive and ouabain-resistant Aedes albopictus cells (Singh)

Virology, 1978
Abstract The effects of ouabain on Sindbis virus replication in cloned sublines of ouabain-sensitive (B 1 C 4 ) and -resistant (Oua 5 ) Aedes albopictus cells have been studied. The addition of ouabain (0.1 m M ) to B 1 C 4 cells 1 hr after infection reduced the yield of infectious virus 500-fold.

Ouabain—The Key to Cardioprotection?

American Journal of Therapeutics, 2014
Based on a wealth of mechanistic evidence supported by the fact that ouabain mimics the spleen-liver effect in this article, the hypothesis is established that the endogenous hormone ouabain not only mimics the effects of ischemic preconditioning but also may be an ideal drug for the prevention of ischemic diseases.

Erythrocyte sodium pump stimulation by ouabain and an endogenous ouabain‐like factor

Cell Biochemistry and Function, 2006
AbstractCardiac glycosides inhibit the sodium pump. However, some studies suggest that nanomolar ouabain concentrations can stimulate the activity of the sodium pump.In this study, using the Na+/K+‐ATPase of human erythrocytes, we compared the effect of digoxin, ouabain and an ouabain like‐factor (OLF), on 86Rb uptake.Ouabain concentrations below 10−9 ...
