Biogenesis of mitochondrial β‐barrel membrane proteins
β‐barrel membrane proteins in the mitochondrial outer membrane are crucial for mediating the metabolite exchange between the cytosol and the mitochondrial intermembrane space. In addition, the β‐barrel membrane protein subunit Tom40 of the translocase of

Meningococcal outer membrane protein NhhA triggers apoptosis in macrophages. [PDF]
Phagocytotic cells play a fundamental role in the defense against bacterial pathogens. One mechanism whereby bacteria evade phagocytosis is to produce factors that trigger apoptosis.

Import and Insertion of Proteins into the Mitochondrial Outer Membrane [PDF]
Nuclear‐encoded proteins destined for insertion into the mitochondrial outer membrane, follow the same general pathway for import as proteins that are translocated to interior compartments within the organelle. This observation is true both for β‐barrel‐type proteins and for proteins that contain hydrophobic α‐helical transmembrane segments.

Imaging and 3D reconstruction of membrane protein complexes by cryo-electron microscopy and single particle analysis [PDF]
Cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) in combination with single particle image processing and volume reconstruction is a powerful technology to obtain medium-resolution structures of large protein complexes, which are extremely difficult to crystallize and ...

Gaining structural information on membrane proteins in their native lipid environment is a long‐standing challenge in molecular biology. Instead, it is common to employ membrane mimetics, which has been shown to affect protein structure, dynamics, and ...

Skp is a multivalent chaperone of outer-membrane proteins [PDF]
The trimeric chaperone Skp sequesters outer-membrane proteins (OMPs) within a hydrophobic cage, thereby preventing their aggregation during transport across the periplasm in Gram-negative bacteria. Here, we studied the interaction between Escherichia coli Skp and five OMPs of varying size.

The invariant phenylalanine of precursor proteins discloses the importance of Omp85 for protein translocation into cyanelles [PDF]
Background Today it is widely accepted that plastids are of cyanobacterial origin. During their evolutionary integration into the metabolic and regulatory networks of the host cell the engulfed cyanobacteria lost their independency.
