Functional Versatility of Vibrio cholerae Outer Membrane Proteins

open access: yesApplied Microbiology
A key feature that differentiates Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria is the outer membrane, an asymmetric membrane composed of lipopolysaccharides, phospholipids, lipoproteins and integral proteins, including the outer-membrane proteins (OMPs).

Comparative studies of Yersinia pestis outer membrane isolation techniques and their potential use in plague epidemiology Estudo comparativo de técnicas de isolamento de membrana externa de Yersinia pestis e seu uso na epidemiologia da peste

open access: yesRevista do Instituto de Medicina Tropical de São Paulo, 1990
In the present study three techniques for obtaining outer membrane enriched fractions from Yersinia pestis were evaluated. The techniques analysed were: differential solubilization of the cytoplasmic membrane with Sarkosyl or Triton X-100, and ...

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Soluble versions of outer membrane cytochromes function as exporters for heterologously produced cargo proteins

open access: yesMicrobial Cell Factories, 2019
This study reveals that it is possible to secrete truncated versions of outer membrane cytochromes into the culture supernatant and that these proteins can provide a basis for the export of heterologously produced proteins.

Membrane proteins in the outer mebrane of plastids and mitochondria [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Channels of the plastid and mitochondrial outer membranes facilitate the turnover of molecules and ions via these membranes. Although channels have been studied many questions pertaining to the whole diversity of plastid and mitochondrial channels in ...

Sites of Biosynthesis of Outer and Inner Membrane Proteins of Neurospora crassa Mitochondria [PDF]

open access: yes, 1970
Outer and inner membranes of Neurospora crassa mitochondria were separated by the combined swelling, shrinking, sonication procedure. Membranes were characterized by electron microscopy and by marker enzyme activities.

Acute caffeine treatment protects the developing retina from ischemia‐induced cell death

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Caffeine reduces cell death in the developing retina under ischemia (OGD). This effect does not involve BDNF upregulation or antioxidant pathways (NRF2/VEGF). Neuroprotection occurs mainly through adenosine A2A receptor antagonism, decreasing glutamate release and excitotoxicity, highlighting caffeine's potential as an acute neuroprotective agent in ...

Strain specific variation of outer membrane proteins of wild Yersinia pestis strains subjected to different growth temperatures

open access: yesMemorias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, 1990
Three Yersinia pestis strains isolated from humans and one laboratory strain (EV76) were grown in rich media at 28§C and 37§C and their outer membrane protein composition compared by sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-Page ...

Predicting the outer membrane proteome of Pasteurella multocida based on consensus prediction enhanced by results integration and manual confirmation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Background Outer membrane proteins (OMPs) of Pasteurella multocida have various functions related to virulence and pathogenesis and represent important targets for vaccine development.

Acinetobacter baumannii Secretes Cytotoxic Outer Membrane Protein A via Outer Membrane Vesicles

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2011
Acinetobacter baumannii is an important nosocomial pathogen that causes a high morbidity and mortality rate in infected patients, but pathogenic mechanisms of this microorganism regarding the secretion and delivery of virulence factors to host cells have not been characterized.
