What is the Outlier —Consistent Outlier or Inconsistent Outlier?

open access: yesAnalytical Science Advances
ABSTRACT In the design of molecules, materials and processes, outliers or outlier samples can be included in a dataset when performing machine learning or regression analysis. Although outlier samples with high prediction errors in regression analysis have been divided into bad leverage points and vertical ...

A Heuristic Approach for Finding Similarity Indexes of Multivariate Data Sets

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2020
Multivariate data sets (MDSs), with enormous size and certain ratio of noise/outliers, are generated routinely in various application domains. A major issue, tightly coupled with these MDSs, is how to compute their similarity indexes with available ...

Chameleon sequences reveal structural effects in proteins representing micelle‐like distribution of hydrophobicity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amino acids sequence of two different proteins with the same sequence (chameleon sequence—black boxes) represent in 3D structure of the proteins different secondary structures: HHHH—helical and BBB—Beta‐structural. The chains folded in water environment adopt different III‐order structures in which the chameleon fragments appear to adopt similar status

Analysing the significance of small conformational changes and low occupancy states in serial crystallographic data

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This protocol paper outlines methods to establish the success of a time‐resolved serial crystallographic experiment, by means of statistical analysis of timepoint data in reciprocal space and models in real space. We show how to amplify the signal from excited states to visualise structural changes in successful experiments.

Robust Särndal-Type Mean Estimators with Re-Descending Coefficients

open access: yesAxioms
When extreme values or outliers occur in asymmetric datasets, conventional mean estimation methods suffer from low accuracy and reliability. This study introduces a novel class of robust Särndal-type mean estimators utilizing re-descending M-estimator ...

Matrix metalloproteinase‐9 regulates cell adhesion and membrane protrusive activity of ovarian cancer cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Matrix metalloproteinase‐9 (MMP9) drives ovarian cancer progression. Using MMP9‐null cells (M9‐KO) created from ovarian cancer cells, we found MMP9 loss did not block Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF)‐driven E‐cadherin dissolution or EMT but delayed and reduced EGF‐driven membrane protrusions. Transient MMP9 re‐expression drove membrane protrusion.

Evolutionarily divergent DUF4465 domains have a common vitamin B12‐binding function

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We show that DUF4465 family proteins, widespread across bacteria from gut microbiomes, hydrothermal vents, and soil, share a common vitamin B12‐binding function. These augmented β‐jellyroll proteins bind vitamin B12 via extended loops. Our findings establish sequence‐diverse DUF4465 proteins as a widespread class of B12‐binding proteins, highlighting ...

Weekly laboratory turn-around time identifies poor performance masked by aggregated reporting

open access: yesAfrican Journal of Laboratory Medicine, 2020
Background: High-level monthly, quarterly and annual turn-around time (TAT) reports are used to assess laboratory performance across the National Health Laboratory Service in South Africa.
