Multi‐point‐line Grounding Fault Section Identification in Urban Distribution Networks by Using Coordinated Multi‐Source Data

open access: yesIET Generation, Transmission &Distribution, Volume 20, Issue 1, January/December 2026.
A multi‐source data collaborative fault section identification method for high fault‐tolerant distribution networks is proposed. The method constructs a robust mixed‐integer linear programming cooperative model by integrating zero‐sequence current direction features and fault indicator alarm signals.

Short‐Circuit Current Analysis of Grid‐Connected Inverters: An Analytical Approach Using Hardware Natural Response and Control Superposition

open access: yesIET Generation, Transmission &Distribution, Volume 20, Issue 1, January/December 2026.
This paper proposes a closed‐form analytical framework predicting the sub‐cycle transient peak currents of grid‐following and grid‐forming inverters during short‐circuit faults. The method uniquely decouples the fault current into a hardware natural response and a control‐commanded response, enabling rapid estimation of instantaneous initial peaks ...

5G for IEC 61850 Smart Grid Communications: Mapping Technology Enablers and Network Slicing Performance Insights

open access: yesIET Generation, Transmission &Distribution, Volume 20, Issue 1, January/December 2026.
This paper maps key 5G technology enablers, such as carrier aggregation, dual connectivity, and network slicing (NS), to IEC 61850 smart grid communication traffic types and experimentally evaluates their performance in commercial 5G networks. Results show that NS enhances reliability for grid protection and automation but still falls short of ultra ...

Beyond 50 Hz, Unlocking Voltage and Frequency for More Flexible Grids

open access: yesIET Generation, Transmission &Distribution, Volume 20, Issue 1, January/December 2026.
This paper proposes a vision that redesigns the distribution grid with asynchronous clusters enabled by power‐electronic interfaces as fundamental units, each capable of operating with independent frequency and voltage magnitude, providing bidirectional and controllable power flow. The vision suggests paradigm shifts redefining the roles of voltage and

Application of evolutionary algorithms for optimal directional overcurrent relay coordination

open access: yes, 2014
Includes bibliographical references.Relay coordination is necessary to ensure that while protection relays operate as fast as possible, they are also able to isolate only the faulted parts of the system from the network, ensuring that a power system ...

Detecting False Data Injection in Smart Grid Overcurrent Relay Settings Using an AE–GAN–SVM Framework

open access: yesIET Generation, Transmission &Distribution, Volume 20, Issue 1, January/December 2026.
This paper introduces a novel protection‐aware AE–GAN–SVM hybrid framework designed to detect and mitigate coordinated false data injection attacks targeting PMU and relay‐setting domains. By integrating topology‐aware generative modelling with swarm robotics search and rescue (SRSR) optimisation, the framework enhances reliability and cyber‐physical ...
