Design, Training, and Field Validation of a YOLOv8‐Based Automated Trap for Remote Detection of Codling Moth, Cydia pomonella

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
We developed and field‐validated a fully automated trap for Cydia pomonella monitoring, combining a camera with a YOLOv8 object‐detection model for remote insect identification. In controlled laboratory validation, the model showed strong performance (precision 0.77, recall 0.83), with moderate reductions under field conditions. Across six experiments,

From leaves to defenders: How the amount and dispersion of leaf damage affect extrafloral nectar production and ant‐mediated protection in wild cotton

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
Extrafloral nectar mediates interactions among plants, ants and herbivores; its contingency on damage amount and within‐plant uniformity is poorly understood. Here, we explore these factors in wild cotton (Gossypium hirsutum). Herbivory amount drove increases in extrafloral nectar induction per nectary, whereas within‐plant variability in damage ...

Environmental stress influences reproductive success in male spider mites

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
This experiment explores how male juvenile food stress impacts reproductive traits in the haplodiploid spider mite Tetranychus urticae. Males exposed to juvenile food stress had lower reproductive success and females mated to these males also suffered reduced fitness as they were not able to produce optimal offspring sex ratios. The negative effects of

Reduced Fecundity Associated with Wolbachia Infection in a Neotropical Drosophilid Redução da fecundidade associada à infecção por Wolbachia em um Drosofilídeo Neotropical

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
Using multiple infected and uninfected Drosophila sturtevanti lines, we investigated (i) the impact of Wolbachia on fecundity and (ii) its effects relative to antibiotic treatment. Based on over 1680 dissected ovaries, fecundity was similar between infected and uninfected flies.

Strong diel variation in the activity of insect taxa sampled by Malaise traps

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
Malaise traps sampled different communities during mornings (06:00–12:00), afternoons (12:00–16:00), evenings (18:00–22:00), and nights (22:00–06:00), highlighting the difference in diel rhythm between taxa. The highest diversity and abundance of insects were found during afternoons, the lowest diversity during night, and the lowest abundance during ...
