Pentazocine overdose

A patient who ingested 1.5 g pentazocine developed status epilepticus, coma, respiratory depression, acidosis, profound hypotension, and ventricular arrhythmias. Although this patient survived after institution of general supportive measures, she did not respond to usual doses of naloxone.

Acetaminophen Overdose

N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is the treatment of choice for acetaminophen overdose. With this therapy, morbidity from overdose can be held to a minimum. Mortality is rare in any case and virtually nonexistent in treated patients. Unless a high index of suspicion is maintained, the diagnosis may be missed until it is too late for effective antidotal treatment.

This is a report of a patient who survived a large propranolol overdose, as documented by toxic blood levels. The signs and symptoms were those of profound inotropic and moderate chronotropic cardiotoxicity which failed to respond to parasympatholytics or catecholamines, but subsequently reversed coincident with the administration of glucagon.
