INTELLIGENCE ACTIVITY IN LATIN AMERICA: CHARACTERISTICS, STRENGTHS, WEAKNESSES, AND FUTURE PROSPECTS

open access: yesPolítica y Estrategia, 2017
Intelligence activity in Latin America has had an interesting evolution in recent years. Emerged or developed in most countries of the region during the Cold War, their characteristics were influenced by the existing concepts of defense and security in ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Development and evaluation of a real-time RT-PCR assay for Mammarenavirus guanaritoense virus detection

open access: yesBMC Infectious Diseases
Mammarenavirus guanaritoense (formerly Guanarito virus, GTOV) is an important etiological agent of an emergent disease with a high mortality rate, namely Venezuelan hemorrhagic fever (VHF).

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Waiving Medicaid Regulations During a Public Health Crisis: Identifying Heterogeneous Effects of Suspending Pre-Admission Screening Requirements on COVID-19 Deaths

open access: yesJournal of Long-Term Care, 2022
Background: During the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency, states were authorized to waive Pre-Admission Screening Resident Review (PASRR), a federal regulation requiring all individuals be evaluated before admission into a federally qualified nursing ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.
