Overvoltage protection for MV-substations

14th International Conference and Exhibition on Electricity Distribution (CIRED 1997 - Distributing Power for the Millennium), 1997
In the past, MV substations, which were fed via cable link with the overhead line, were often destroyed due to lightning flashes. These damages occurred although the unit substations are in general protected by a surge arrester at the cable/overhead line conjunction against lightning overvoltages.

Protection of Section Parts from Overvoltage

2021 IEEE 2nd KhPI Week on Advanced Technology (KhPIWeek), 2021
World practice of operating electric networks shows that reclosers are used to partition them, as a rule. National regulatory documents governing the use of reclosers do not yet exist, which raises questions related to their operation. One such issue is surge protection for the recloser.

Overvoltage protection for computer serial communication

PowerCon 2000. 2000 International Conference on Power System Technology. Proceedings (Cat. No.00EX409), 2002
Micro-electronic circuits are often damaged by overvoltage. Shunting current, equalizing voltage, grounding, shielding and surge suppression are effective countermeasures for overvoltage protection, but overvoltage protection for micro-electronic circuits has some special demands different from these for electrical equipment.

Overvoltage protection in wind power farms

2012 International Conference on Lightning Protection (ICLP), 2012
Lightning and overvoltage protection of wind power farms and wind power generators is addressed considering the different equipment and stresses. Standards are discussed and typical cases show that further investigations are necessary and new surge protective devices have to be developed and tested.

Overvoltage protection of gas-insulated substations

Power Engineering Journal, 1987
Increasing demand for electrical power in centres of large conurbations has led to the development of compact gasinsulated substations. For these it is not possible to follow established practice of fitting co-ordination gaps, and therefore surge arresters have to be used to limit ...

Overvoltage and surge protection in DC-systems

2012 International Conference on Lightning Protection (ICLP), 2012
DC-systems have been on the rise over the last years. The need for an effective surge and overvoltage protection for DC-systems increases accordingly. Both the current installation standards for SPDs and also the product standards mainly focus on the application of SPDs in AC-systems. Therefore this paper analyses based on measurements and calculations

Overvoltage protection, faults and voltage sags

2004 11th International Conference on Harmonics and Quality of Power (IEEE Cat. No.04EX951), 2005
Distribution transformers in rural networks have to cope with frequent lightning induced overvoltages and thus must be protected using spark gaps or surge arresters. The overvoltage protection type has an influence on the system behaviour and on the interruptions and voltage sags experienced by power system customers. In this paper, measurement results

Transient overvoltage protection for UPS applications

2011 IEEE Trondheim PowerTech, 2011
Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) are used to ensure a continuous and reliable supply to critical loads. Different UPS technologies are available, offering different levels of load protection and power conditioning. This paper discusses various UPS topologies and operating modes, identifying the paths over which a surge or transient voltage may ...

Overvoltage protection and insulation coordination

2015
The surge arrester at the line entrance must be installed for the protection from fast-front overvoltages. The selected surge arrester in the simulation model has a sufficient performance for the assumed lightning strike and other conditions. The standard rated lightning impulse withstand voltage can be selected from 1,050, 1,175, 1,300, and 1,425 kV ...
