Differential transcriptome analysis of glandular and filamentous trichomes in Artemisia annua [PDF]
Background: The medicinal plant Artemisia annua is covered with filamentous trichomes and glandular, artemisinin producing trichomes. A high artemisinin supply is needed at a reduced cost for treating malaria. Artemisinin production in bioreactors can be

A conserved amino acid residue critical for product and substrate specificity in plant triterpene synthases [PDF]
Triterpenes are structurally complex plant natural products with numerous medicinal applications. They are synthesized through an origami-like process that involves cyclization of the linear 30 carbon precursor 2,3-oxidosqualene into different triterpene

A Soluble 2,3-Oxidosqualene Sterol Cyclase
An enzyme catalyzing the anaerobic cyclization of 2,3-oxidosqualene into lanosterol has been extracted from hog liver microsomes by treatment with deoxycholate. Removal of deoxycholate, delipidation with ether, and ammonium sulfate precipitation yield a soluble 20-fold purified cyclase. No coenzyme requirements could be demonstrated for the cyclization

Oxidosqualene Cyclase (OSC) Inhibitors for the Treatment of Dyslipidemia
Novel inhibitors of oxidosqualene cyclase (OSC) for the treatment of dyslipidemia are reported. Starting point for the chemistry program was a set of compounds derived from a fungicide project which, in addition to high affinity for OSC from ...

The activity of rat liver microsomal squalene epoxidase is inhibited effectively by digitonin. Concentrations of 0.8 to 1.2 mg/ml of digitonin cause total inhibition of microsomal (0.75 mg protein/ml) squalene epoxidase either in microsomes that were ...

Introduction: Triterpenoids and saponins have a broad range of pharmacological activities. Unlike most legumes which contain mainly oleanane-type scaffold, Astragalus membranaceus contains not only oleanane-type but also cycloartane-type saponins, for ...
