Tumor‐stromal crosstalk and macrophage enrichment are associated with chemotherapy response in bladder cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Chemoresistance in bladder cancer: Macrophage recruitment associated with CXCL1, CXCL5 and CXCL8 expression is characteristic of Gemcitabine/Cisplatin (Gem/Cis) Non‐Responder tumors (right side) while Responder tumors did not show substantial tumor‐stromal crosstalk (left side). All biological icons are attributed to Bioicons: carcinoma, cancerous‐cell‐

Dapagliflozin prevents methylglyoxal‐induced retinal cell death in ARPE‐19 cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Diabetic macular oedema is a diabetes complication of the eye, which may lead to permanent blindness. ARPE‐19 are human retinal cells used to study retinal diseases and potential therapeutics. Methylglyoxal is a compound increased in uncontrolled diabetes due to elevated blood glucose.

Metal-free carbon-nitrogen@carbon-type hybrid electrocatalysts for peroxide-producing oxygen reduction reaction

open access: yesCarbon Future
Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a widely utilized chemical in environmental cleaning, medical disinfection, and chemical engineering. Compared to the traditional anthraquinone oxidation method, the electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has become ...

Dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH) regulates trophoblast syncytialization through organelle stress–induced cellular senescence

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The inhibition of mitochondrial dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH) impairs syncytialization and induces cellular senescence via mitochondrial and endoplasmic reticulum stress in human trophoblast stem cells, elevating sFlt1/PlGF levels, a hallmark of placental dysfunction in hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.

First principles studies of the size and shape effects on reactivity of the Se modified Ru nanoparticles

open access: yes, 2012
We present here the results of our density-functional-theory-based calculations of the electronic and geometric structures and energetics of Se and O adsorption on Ru 93- and 105-atom nanoparticles. These studies have been inspired by the fact that Se/Ru

Enhanced oxygen reduction reaction on caffeine-modified platinum single-crystal electrodes

open access: yesCommunications Chemistry
Enhancing the activity of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is crucial for fuel cell development, and hydrophobic species are known to increase the ORR activity.

Two-dimensional circular platinum nanodendrites toward efficient oxygen reduction reaction and methanol oxidation reaction

open access: yesElectrochemistry Communications, 2019
Two-dimensional circular platinum nanodendrites (~13 nm thick, up to 138.8 nm in diameter) were synthesized by chemical reduction of platinum complexes with ascorbic acid in the presence of block copolymer and pre-formed seeds.

PARP inhibitors induce a senescence phenotype in non‐small cell lung carcinoma cell lines

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Talazoparib is the most potent inducer of senescence among different PARP1 inhibitors in human NSCLC cells. In the absence of PARP, no senescence phenotype was observed, demonstrating that PARP1 is necessary for the induction of senescence by this inhibitor.

Mass-transport resistances of acid and alkaline ionomer layers: A microelectrode study part 1 - Microelectrode development [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The use of microelectrodes to study localized mass-transport phenomena in fuel-cell catalyst layers is an increasingly valuable tool. However, existing microelectrode cells have been used in static, equilibrated environment modes with poorly controlled ...

Porphyrin-based frameworks and derivatives for the oxygen reduction reaction

open access: yesMaterials Today Catalysis
The global energy crisis and environmental pollution issues caused by the continuous consumption of fossil fuels are increasingly becoming severe. Developing clean and sustainable hydrogen (H2) energy and corresponding storage and conversion devices have
