Tissue microvascular flow and oxygenation in critically ill patients [PDF]
PhDThe use of fluid resuscitation and vasoactive agents to optimise global haemodynamics has been demonstrated to improve outcomes in patients undergoing major surgery and in early sepsis.

Cerebral and Peripheral Tissue Oxygenation in Children Supported on ECMO for Cardio-Respiratory Failure [PDF]
Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a rescue therapy for patients with cardio-respiratory failure. Establishing, maintaining and weaning from ECMO may increase the risk for intracranial injury.

Superimposed high-frequency jet ventilation combined with continuous positive airway pressure/assisted spontaneous breathing improves oxygenation in patients with H1N1-associated ARDS [PDF]
Background: Numerous cases of swine-origin 2009 H1N1 influenza A virus (H1N1)-associated acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) bridged by extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy have been reported; however, complication rates are high. We

Mechanism of Oxygen "buffering" by Caveolae
The ‘oxygen paradox’ can be explained as two opposing biological processes with oxygen (O2) as a reactant. On the one hand, oxygen is essential to aerobic metabolism, being used by mitochondria to fuel oxidative phosphorylation. On the other hand, an excess supply of oxygen will generate reactive species which are harmful for the cell.

Acute Oxygen-Sensing Mechanisms [PDF]
This review discusses recent advances in the understanding of the ways in which different organs detect and respond to acute changes in oxygen tension. A group of specialized tissues constitutes an oxygen-sensing system that responds rapidly to even minor changes in oxygen tension.

Linoleate dioxygenase-cytochrome P450 (DOX-CYP) fusion enzymes are common in pathogenic fungi. The DOX domains form hydroperoxy metabolites of 18:2n-6, which can be transformed by the CYP domains to 1,2- or 1,4-diols, epoxy alcohols, or to allene oxides.

Lung Transplantation for Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome after SARS-CoV-2 Infection
Background The majority of patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection present mild symptoms. However, some patients develop severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and subsequent irreversible lung ...

Mechanisms of Oxidation with Oxygen [PDF]
Several topics are dealt with in discussing the reactions of molecular oxygen, but a common goal is pursued in each: to try to understand the reactions in terms of the fundamental properties of the oxygen molecule, and of the other reactants. The paper first describes the electronic structure of oxygen and of two low-lying electronically excited states.

Mechanism of Interstitial Oxygen Diffusion in Hafnia [PDF]
We have performed density functional calculations of oxygen incorporation and diffusion in monoclinic hafnia (HfO2) for a range of oxygen charge states. The calculations demonstrate that oxygen favors atomic incorporation and that O2- is the most stable species. We find that oxygen interstitials diffuse via exchange with lattice oxygen sites in hafnia,
