Oxygen trends in the Galactic thin and thick disks [PDF]

open access: yesAstron.Astrophys. 415 (2004) 155, 2003
We present oxygen abundances for 72 F and G dwarf stars in the solar neighbourhood. Using the kinematics of the stars we divide them into two sub-samples with space velocities that are typical for the thick and thin disks, respectively. The metallicities of the stars range from [Fe/H] = -0.9 to +0.4 and we use the derived oxygen abundances of the stars

Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) after extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO): Incidence, risks and survivals. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
INTRODUCTION: Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) is frequently observed after extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) decannulation; however, these issues have not been investigated well in the past. METHODS: Retrospective chart review was

Al₂O₃‐Functionalized Carbon Nanomembranes with Enhanced Water Permeance and Selectivity for Efficient Air Dehumidification

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Carbon nanomembranes with ultra‐thin Al2O3 functionalization are less than 15 nm thin and exhibit outstanding permeation performance with a water vapor/nitrogen selectivity higher than 1 × 104, twice that of pristine CNMs, and an exceptionally high water vapor permeation rate for potential applications in air dehumidification.

Paracorporeal Lung Devices: Thinking Outside the Box

open access: yesFrontiers in Pediatrics, 2018
Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) is a resource intensive, life-preserving support system that has seen ever-expanding clinical indications as technology and collective experience has matured. Clinicians caring for patients who develop pulmonary

Physical properties and band structure of reactive molecular beam epitaxy grown oxygen engineered HfO$_{2\pm x}$ [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
We have conducted a detailed thin film growth structure of oxygen engineered monoclinic HfO$_{2\pm x}$ grown by reactive molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The oxidation conditions induce a switching between ($\bar{1}11$) and (002) texture of hafnium oxide. The band gap of oxygen deficient hafnia decreases with increasing amount of oxygen vacancies by more ...

ABC of oxygen: Diving and oxygen [PDF]

open access: yesBMJ, 1998
All organisms require oxygen for metabolism, but the oxygen in water is unavailable to mammals. Divers (and diving mammals such as whales and seals) are entirely dependent on the oxygen carried in the air in their lungs or their gas supply. Divers also have a paradoxical problem with oxygen.

Biologically‐Inspired Melt Electrowriting for the Generation of Highly Biomimetic Functional Myocardium

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In this work, melt electrowriting is used to fabricate a 3D printed scaffold design that generates engineered cardiac tissues with in‐plane contraction, mimicking natural myocardium. It is shown that these tissues display advanced maturation and functionality.

Structured, Shaped, or Printed Single‐Atom Catalysts and Their Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This paper reviews the design and use of structured single‐atom catalysts, which integrate porous architectures with the exceptional reactivity of isolated catalytic sites. It explores fabrication strategies, advanced characterization methods, and support materials that enhance thermal stability, mechanical robustness, and operational efficiency of ...

Use of extracorporeal membranous oxygenator in transcatheter aortic valve replacement.

open access: yesAnnals of Translational Medicine, 2016
The superiority of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) compared with medical therapy for patients with aortic stenosis (AS) who are not suitable candidates for surgery had been proven.
