Membrane Vesicles Can Contribute to Cellulose Degradation by Teredinibacter turnerae, a Cultivable Intracellular Endosymbiont of Shipworms

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 17, Issue 12, December 2024.
When grown in pure culture, Teredinibacter turnerae secretes membrane vesicles (MVs) enriched in carbohydrate‐active enzymes (CAZymes) predicted to be involved in lignocellulose degradation. Activity assays confirm that these MVs retain the ability to hydrolyse cellulose.

Fire drives major Holocene vegetation shifts between subtropical and Mediterranean‐type ecosystems: a case study from a biodiversity hotspot in South Africa

open access: yesEcography, Volume 2024, Issue 12, December 2024.
Fire plays a pivotal role in driving ecological shifts between Mediterranean‐type vegetation and subtropical ecosystems in South Africa. This study investigates long‐term environmental dynamics and ecological regime changes at the Mediterranean‐type vegetation /subtropical boundary using a 6000‐year palaeoecological sequence from the Baviaanskloof – a ...

Extracting secondary data from citizen science images reveals host flower preferences of the Mexican grass‐carrying wasp Isodontia mexicana in its native and introduced ranges

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 6, June 2024.
This study uses citizen‐scientist photographic records to examine pollinator‐plant interactions of the wasp Isodontia mexicana in its native and introduced range. We use a data sharing method by identifying the plants on iNaturalist images of the wasp using the Pl@ntNet API, a plant species identification application.

The emerging importance of cross‐ploidy hybridisation and introgression

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 33, Issue 8, April 2024.
Abstract Natural hybridisation is now recognised as pervasive in its occurrence across the Tree of Life. Resurgent interest in natural hybridisation fuelled by developments in genomics has led to an improved understanding of the genetic factors that promote or prevent species cross‐mating.

Pollen, anther, stamen, and androecium mimicry

open access: yesPlant Biology, Volume 26, Issue 3, Page 349-368, April 2024.
Mimics of pollen, anthers, stamens, and androecia, their models and pollen eating bees and hoverflies constitute the world's largest mimicry system. ABSTRACT Floral colours represent a highly diverse communication signal mainly involved in flower visitors' attraction and guidance, but also flower discrimination, filtering non‐pollinators and ...
