Does the amount of pacific salmon catch affect the wholesale prices of their products?

open access: yesИзвестия ТИНРО
Since 2017, volatility of weekly wholesale prices for pacific salmon increased in the Russian domestic market, particularly in the Far East of Russia, that had coincided with higher fluctuations of the weekly and annual catch.

Parentage‐based tagging combined with genetic stock identification is a cost‐effective and viable replacement for coded‐wire tagging in large‐scale assessments of marine Chinook salmon fisheries in British Columbia, Canada

open access: yesEvolutionary Applications, 2021
Wild Pacific salmon, including Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, have been supplemented with hatchery propagation for over 50 years in support of increased ocean harvest, mitigation for hydroelectric development, and conservation of threatened ...

A Tool for Prioritizing Gravel Augmentation Reaches for Sediment Starved Rivers

open access: yesRiver Research and Applications, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Gravel augmentation is a widely used restoration technique used to improve habitat below dams, including salmonids spawning habitat. However, gravel augmentation can be cost‐prohibitive, and it is often unclear which stream segments have the highest potential to benefit spawning salmonids.

Geomorphic Effects and Habitat Impacts of Large Wood at Restoration Sites in New England

open access: yesRiver Research and Applications, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Large wood (used interchangeably with the term “instream wood”), which refers to trees, logs and other wood within a channel, is beneficial to river ecosystems and is being used more frequently as a component of river restoration projects. We identified metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of large wood to promote ecological and geomorphic ...

Non‐Physical Barrier Design and Environmental Conditions Alter Routing and Survival of Juvenile Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) in the Sacramento‐San Joaquin River Delta

open access: yesRiver Research and Applications, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Pacific salmon face substantial challenges when migrating through anthropogenically modified river systems, such as the Sacramento‐San Joaquin River Delta (the Delta). Non‐physical behavioral barriers, such as the bioacoustic fish fence (BAFF), are one potential solution for guiding fish away from hazards without obstructing water flow ...

Results of salmon fishery in the Far-Eastern fishery basin in 2023

open access: yesИзвестия ТИНРО
Data on forecasted catch, actual catch and their ratio for the main species of pacific salmon are presented; the salmon fishery in the Far Eastern fishery basin in 2023 is analyzed; the reasons for discrepancy between the actual catches of pacific salmon

From snapshots to continuous estimates: Augmenting citizen science with computer vision for fish monitoring

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
This study presents an end‐to‐end computer‐vision pipeline for monitoring fish migration using underwater video. We integrate field camera deployment, annotation, model training and automated in‐season counting to generate continuous, high‐resolution data on river herring spawning migration.

Sustainability: The Forgotten Arena of eSports Research—A Systematic Literature Review From an ESG Perspective

open access: yesSustainable Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Despite the growth of eSports, the sector faces critical challenges related to its sustainability. This research analyzes these issues from an environmental, social, and governance (ESG) perspective. This paper consists of a systematic literature review on eSports and its implications for sustainability.

A Bayesian classification model to reconstruct lifetime movement patterns of riverine fish using environmental tracers

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, EarlyView.
Abstract Environmental tracers, including both elemental concentrations and isotope ratios, are widely used to reconstruct the movement patterns of animals throughout landscapes. The methodology involves creating a map that describes the distribution of the environmental tracer across the landscape, an isoscape and then matching the values of the same ...

Independent testing of PIT tags for fisheries research: a framework for standardization and performance evaluation

open access: yesAnimal Biotelemetry
Background Passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags are widely used to track animal movements and survival. Rigorous testing protocols are necessary to ensure reliability in PIT tag performance and resulting data across various environmental conditions.
