Sustainable packaging design: a holistic methodology for packaging design
Packaging Technology and Science, 2010AbstractThis study describes a holistic methodology for sustainable packaging design. This methodology studies the combined systems of packaging and the packaged products across the whole distribution chain from manufacturer to end consumer and the life cycle from raw material extraction to the waste phase.

Most of the papers presented at this symposium deal with advanced packaging designs and techniques. This paper, however, will attempt to describe some of the best regressive thinking of packaging design, which we choose to term “illogical packaging design.” Illogical design is not a concept; rather, it may be termed a lack of concept.

A brand’s packaging design can play an important role in projecting its personality. In the pharmaceutical industry the design of Rx packaging has been functional rather than decorative, and limited to the communication of essential information. But with the increase in brands moving from Rx to OTC, the design of brand packaging will take on a new ...

THE cardinal principle of functional package design can be stated very simply. The properties of the product to be packaged and the conditions to be met an merchandising channels determine the package protection required. In practice this principle is often qualified by considerations of costs and of conventions established by the trade.
