Protein Language Model‐Guided Engineering of a 2,3‐Butanediol Dehydrogenase for the Enantioselective Synthesis of Cyclic α‐Hydroxy Ketones

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 18, 27 March 2026.
A (2R,3R)‐butanediol dehydrogenase from Bacillus subtilis (BsBDH) is engineered for the enantioselective synthesis of 2‐hydroxycyclohexanone. A PASS computational design strategy is proposed to enhance the thermostability of BsBDH. Moreover, ESM‐1v combined with ISM is utilized for enhancing and inverting its stereoselectivity.

Antibacterial Gene Transfer Across the Tree of Life [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Though horizontal gene transfer (HGT) is widespread, genes and taxa experience biased rates of transferability. Curiously, independent transmission of homologous DNA to archaea, bacteria, eukaryotes, and viruses is extremely rare and often defies ...

From Membrane Composition to Antimicrobial Strategies: Experimental and Computational Approaches to AMP Design and Selectivity

open access: yesSmall, Volume 22, Issue 16, 17 March 2026.
Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are promising candidates for next‐generation antibiotics, acting through mechanisms such as membrane disruption and intracellular targeting. This review examines how variations in bacterial membrane composition critically influence AMP activity.

Endophytic Paenibacillus polymyxa LMG27872 inhibits Meloidogyne incognita parasitism, promoting tomato growth through a dose-dependent effect

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2022
The root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita, is a major pest in tomato production. Paenibacillus polymyxa, which is primarily found in soil and colonizing roots, is considered a successful biocontrol organism against many pathogens.

Effects of glucose and inoculum concentrations on production of bioactive molecules by Paenibacillus polymyxa RNC-D: a statistical experimental design [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The composition of culture media and the microbial cell mass influence on secondary metabolites production in fermentative procedures. The effect of two process variables, namely glucose and inoculum concentrations on biomass formation, bioactivity ...

The Volatile Pentadecane From Bacillus Alleviates Plant Iron Deficiency Through Activating the Reduction‐Based Fe Uptake System

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, Volume 24, Issue 3, Page 1564-1577, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Iron (Fe) is an essential micronutrient for plant growth and development. Rhizosphere microorganisms play crucial roles in plant Fe nutrition, yet the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. Here, we assessed the effect of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by Bacillus velezensis SQR9 on Fe uptake in Arabidopsis, elucidated ...

2,3-Butanediol and Acetoin Production from Enzymatic Hydrolysate of Ionic Liquid-pretreated Cellulose by Paenibacillus polymyxa

open access: yesBioResources, 2015
A safe microorganism (class 1), Paenibacillus polymyxa, was used for 2,3-butanediol and acetoin production, which could make the fermentation process cheaper and less complex.

Multiple Receptors Contribute to the Attractive Response of Caenorhabditis elegans to Pathogenic Bacteria

open access: yesMicrobiology Spectrum, 2023
Nematodes feed mainly on bacteria and sense volatile signals through their chemosensory system to distinguish food from pathogens. Although nematodes recognizing bacteria by volatile metabolites are ubiquitous, little is known of the associated molecular

Enhancement of Nitrogenase Activity in Recombinant Escherichia coli by Replacing Upstream Region of nif Operon from Paenibacillus Species

open access: yesChemBioChem, Volume 27, Issue 3, 12 February 2026.
Biological N2 fixation by nitrogenase offers a sustainable alternative to the Haber–Bosch process. Heterologous nitrogenase production in Escherichia coli is a promising strategy. We engineered E. coli with nitrogen fixation (nif) operons from diazotrophic Paenibacillus species.
