Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Time Evolution of an Infinite Projected Entangled Pair State: an Efficient Algorithm [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
An infinite projected entangled pair state (iPEPS) is a tensor network ansatz to represent a quantum state on an infinite 2D lattice whose accuracy is controlled by the bond dimension $D$.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Halogen Bonding Involving CO and CS with Carbon as the Electron Donor

open access: yesMolecules, 2017
MP2/aug’-cc-pVTZ calculations have been carried out to investigate the halogen-bonded complexes formed when CO and CS act as electron-pair donors through C to ClF, ClNC, ClCl, ClOH, ClCN, ClCCH, and ClNH2.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Strain-driven lone pair electron expression for thermal transport in BiCuSeO

open access: yesNature Communications
The stereochemical activity of lone-pair electrons critically influences lattice anharmonicity and thermal transport in crystals. However, traditional chemical substitution methods lack continuity and reversibility.

Modelling DNA Response to THz Radiation

open access: yes, 2011
Collective response of DNA to THz electric fields is studied in a simple pair bond model. We confirm, with some caveats, a previous observation of destabilising DNA breather modes and explore the parameter-dependence of these modes.

Pair-bonding on the brain

open access: yesCommunications Biology
As a monogamous species, the prairie vole is a common model for social neuroscience. Gustison and colleagues mapped a whole-brain histological atlas of the prairie vole and used this atlas to identify a neural network of pair-bonding behaviour. The study reveals coordinated neural networks in mated pairs and highlights the influence of social bonding ...

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

Homogeneous CO Hydrogenation: Dihydrogen Activation Involves a Frustrated Lewis Pair Instead of a Platinum Complex [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
During a search for conditions appropriate for Pt-catalyzed CO reduction using dihydrogen directly, metal-free conditions were discovered instead.
