Urban Green Spaces Set the Stage for Rare Interspecific Allopreening Between Crested Caracara (Caracara plancus) and Black Vultures (Coragyps atratus)

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 1, January 2026.
Observations in San Antonio, Texas documented rare interspecific allopreening between crested caracaras and black vultures at Phil Hardberger Park. This represents the first recorded instance of such behavior in an urban green space, expanding the known ecological and geographic scope of interspecies social interactions.

Lady Parts and Baby Parts: What Is a Fetus?

open access: yesPhilosophy and Phenomenological Research, Volume 112, Issue 1, Page 161-174, January 2026.
ABSTRACT A common‐sense view of mammalian pregnancy treats the fetus as (a) an organism and (b) co‐extensive with the approximately baby‐shaped entity developing in the uterus. In this paper, I draw on metabolic accounts of the organism to show that (a) and (b) cannot both be correct: either the fetus is not an organism, or it is considerably more ...

Knot theory of R-covered Anosov flows: homotopy versus isotopy of closed orbits

open access: yes, 2012
In this article, we study the knots realized by periodic orbits of R-covered Anosov flows in compact 3-manifolds. We show that if two orbits are freely homotopic then in fact they are isotopic. We show that lifts of periodic orbits to the universal cover

Three‐Dimensional Numerical Simulations of Internal Tides in the Cape Verde and Senegalo‐Mauritanian Upwelling Regions

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 130, Issue 11, November 2025.
Abstract Tide‐topography interactions, key drivers of upwelling and mixing, remain poorly understood within the Cape Verde area (CVA) and the Senegalo‐Mauritanian upwelling regions. Therefore, a three‐dimensional numerical model, initialized with horizontally uniform stratification and driven by barotropic tidal forcing only, is employed to study the ...
