Pancreatic disease in the elderly
Best Practice & Research Clinical Gastroenterology, 2002Pancreatic diseases occur in patients of every age. Older individuals suffer more often from gallstone related acute pancreatitis, ischaemic and idiopathic acute pancreatitis, whereas alcohol-induced acute pancreatitis occurs only in a minority of cases. Similarly, alcohol-related chronic pancreatitis in elderly people is rare and late-onset idiopathic

Genetics and pancreatic disease
Current Opinion in Gastroenterology, 2002The recognition that variations in the DNA sequence of key genes predispose individuals to acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis, and pancreatic cancer represents one of the greatest breakthroughs in pancreas research. This review highlights recent progress in understanding mutations in the cationic trypsinogen gene, the pancreatic secretory trypsin

Nutrition in pancreatic diseases
Best Practice & Research Clinical Gastroenterology, 2006The pancreas plays a major role in nutrient digestion. Therefore, in both acute and chronic pancreatitis, exocrine and endocrine pancreatic insufficiency can develop, impairing digestive and absorptive processes. These changes can lead to malnutrition over time. In parallel to these changes, decreased caloric intake and increased metabolic activity are

Pancreatic Disease in Dyspepsia
Digestion, 2009Determination of the serum activity of pancreatic isoamylase was performed in 30–6 5-year-old men seeking primary health care centers for dyspepsia. Of 36 consecutive patients 7 had abnormal pancreatic isoamylase activity in serum. This figure indicates dyspepsia to be commonly associated with pancreatic disease such as chronic pancreatitis.

Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) is a noninvasive diagnostic modality capable of producing high-quality images of the biliary tree and pancreatic duct. We evaluated the MRCP capability of depicting the normal pancreatic duct and, based on data achieved, studied the usefulness in the pathologic pancreatic duct. MRCP was performed in 42
