Comprehensive evaluation of resistance effects of pyramiding lines with different broad-spectrum resistance genes against Magnaporthe oryzae in rice (Oryza sativa L.)

open access: yesRice, 2019
Background Broad-spectrum resistance gene pyramiding helps the development of varieties with broad-spectrum and durable resistance to M. oryzae. However, detailed information about how these different sources of broad-spectrum resistance genes act ...

Staging an Experience of Cultural Heritage Preservation: Consumers' Willingness to Pay for Heirloom Rice in the Philippines

open access: yesAgribusiness, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The Cordillera Administrative Region in the Philippines is home to terraced rice embedded in centuries of cultural heritage. However, weak market incentives threaten sustained production, jeopardizing indigenous communities' cultural heritage and the in situ biodiversity of rice genetic resources.

Evaluation of Blast Resistance in Zinc-Biofortified Rice

open access: yesPlants
Rice is a staple food for over half of the world’s population, and it is grown in over 100 countries. Rice blast disease can cause 10% to 30% crop loss, enough to feed 60 million people.

Natural variation in the GNH1 promoter enhances plant height and grain yield in rice

open access: yesJournal of Integrative Plant Biology, EarlyView.
Natural variation in the GRAIN NUMBER AND PLANT HEIGHT 1 (GNH1) promoter alleviates repression by the C2H2‐type transcription factor ZFP36, upregulating GNH1 expression and promoting auxin accumulation, thereby increasing rice plant height and grain yield. This elite allele serves as a valuable genetic resource for molecular breeding of high‐yield rice.

TaHDA1‐mediated histone and non‐histone deacetylation orchestrates drought tolerance in wheat

open access: yesJournal of Integrative Plant Biology, EarlyView.
The histone deacetylase TaHDA1 is a key regulator linking histone and non‐histone deacetylation with drought adaptation and a potential target for improving drought resilience and grain nutritional quality in wheat. ABSTRACT Drought stress severely constrains wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) growth and productivity.

Rice Blast: A Disease with Implications for Global Food Security

open access: yesAgronomy, 2019
Rice blast is a serious fungal disease of rice (Oryza sativa L.) that is threatening global food security. It has been extensively studied due to the importance of rice production and consumption, and because of its vast distribution and destructiveness ...

The breeding of japonica rice in northern China: An 11-year study (2006–2016)

open access: yesJournal of Integrative Agriculture, 2020
The world's population is facing food shortages due to climate change and the competition for arable land between food and energy crops. Many national and international projects to develop “super rice” cultivars were established in recent decades to ...

Structural Variations Contribute to Subspeciation and Yield Heterosis in Rice

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Yield heterosis has been extensively exploited in hybrid breeding, with intersubspecific hybrids often exhibiting the most pronounced effects. However, developing elite hybrids remains a laborious and time‐consuming process. The genetic basis of heterosis has been debated for over a century, hindered largely by the lack of high‐quality genomes.

Assessment of Rice Panicle Blast Disease Using Airborne Hyperspectral Imagery [PDF]

open access: yesThe Open Agriculture Journal, 2016
Rice blast disease occurs in rice production areas all over the world and is the most important disease in Japan. Remote sensing techniques may provide a mean for detecting disease intensity for large area without being subjected to raters. This study evaluated the use of airborne hyperspectral imagery to measure the severity of panicle blast in field ...

Time‐series multi‐omics analysis of micronutrient stress in Sorghum bicolor reveals iron and zinc crosstalk and regulatory network conservation

open access: yesPlant Biology, EarlyView.
Overlap between Fe and Zn responsive gene regulatory networks (GRNs) were found, indicative of micronutrient crosstalk, and conservation of root and leaf GRNs and genes suggests strong constraint on homeostasis networks in plants. Abstract Micronutrient stress impacts growth, biomass production, and grain yield in crops.
