The innervation of the aesthetasc hairs of Panulirus argus
Journal of Cell Science, 1965ABSTRACT The aesthetasc hairs that occur on the outer ramus of the antennule of Panulirus argus are heavily innervated. Approximately 350 neurones are present at the base of each hair, and dendrites pass up into the hair lumen. These dendrites end one-third of the distance to the hair tip.

Phenoloxidase activity in the hemolymph of the spiny lobster Panulirus argus
Fish & Shellfish Immunology, 2007The prophenoloxidase activating system plays a major role in the defense mechanism of arthropods. In the present study, the phenoloxidase activity and its location in the hemolymph of the spiny lobster Panulirus argus is presented. Phenoloxidase activity was observed in the hemocyte lysate supernatant (HLS) and plasma after their incubation with ...

The fine structure of gill ‘podocytes’ in Panulirus argus (crustacea)
Tissue and Cell, 1970A cell type structurally resembling the podocyte of the renal glomerulus is situated in the gill of the crustacean Panulirus argus. These cells adjoin the medial septum of the gill filament and invariably face the efferent haemolymph channel. The basal cell surface is produced into a series of regular ridges, between which are inserted elongated cell ...

Chemotaxis in the Florida spiny lobster, Panulirus argus
Animal Behaviour, 1980Abstract The relative importance of input from chemoreceptors on the medial versus the lateral antennular flagellae of the spiny lobster, Panulirus argus , in olfactory orientation is examined. Ablation experiments show that input from the lateral filament, specifically the aesthetase tuft of the lateral filament, is necessary and sufficient to ...

The Function of A Heteromorph Antennule in A Spiny Lobster, Panulirus Argus*
Journal of Experimental Biology, 1965ABSTRACT The effects of electrical and mechanical stimulation upon a ‘naturally occurring ‘heteromorph appendage growing in place of one eyestalk in Panulirus argus were examined. The heteromorph resembled the outer flagellum of the antennule in form. Heteromorph stimulation elicited both a generalized withdrawal response, and a specific

Motor patterns in the stomatogastric ganglion of the lobster Panulirus argus
Journal of Experimental Biology, 1975ABSTRACT Activity patterns arising from the thirty cells of the stomatogastric ganglion of Panulirus argus are described for both a semi-intact preparation and an isolated one. The thirty or so cells can be divided so far into two functional groupings: the gastric mill group, with at least ten motor elements, and the pyloric group with ...

Perception of odor mixtures by the spiny lobster Panulirus argus
Chemical Senses, 1994We used spiny lobsters (Panulirus argus) in a discrimination learning procedure with aversive conditioning to examine their behavioral discrimination of adenosine-5'-monophosphate (AMP), betaine, L-cysteine and their binary mixtures. Our results show that spiny lobsters can clearly discriminate among binary mixtures and their components.

We studied electrophysiological properties of single chemosensory neurons in the mouthparts of the spiny lobsters Panulirus argus and Panulirus interruptus to complement our growing understanding of the behavioral roles of mouthparts of decapod crustaceans.

In Situ Mating Behavior of the Spiny Lobster Panulirus Argus
Journal of Crustacean Biology, 1983ABSTRACT We present the only documented in situ observations of spiny lobster mating behavior. Four consecutive interactions, including copulation between a large male and smaller female Panulirus argus, were filmed in shallow Bahamian waters during May 1980.

Polymorphism and partial characterization of digestive enzymes in the spiny lobster Panulirus argus
Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part B: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, 2008We characterized major digestive enzymes in Panulirus argus using a combination of biochemical assays and substrate-(SDS or native)-PAGE. Protease and amylase activities were found in the gastric juice while esterase and lipase activities were higher in the digestive gland. Trypsin-like activity was higher than chymotrypsin-like activity in the gastric
