Alternations in the foraging behaviour of a primary consumer drive patch transition dynamics in a temperate rocky reef ecosystem. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Lett, 2022
Understanding the role of animal behavior in linking individuals to ecosystems is central to advancing knowledge surrounding community structure, stability, and transition dynamics. Using 22‐years of long‐term subtidal monitoring, we show that an abrupt outbreak of purple sea urchins (Strongylocentrotus purpuratus) in southern Monterey Bay, California,

Effects of the ‘El Niño’ event on the recruitment of benthic invertebrates in Bahía Tortugas, Baja California Sur [PDF]

open access: yesGeofísica Internacional, 2003
An evaluation of the effects of El Niño (1997-98) on the recruitment of benthic invertebrates (abalone, spiny lobster, and kelp beds) was carried out in two reefs at Bahía Tortugas on the central Pacific coast of Baja California.

Unveiling Women’s Roles and Inclusion in Mexican Small-Scale Fisheries (SSF)

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2021
The contributions of women to fisheries are often invisible, ignored, and unrecognized even though they represent 47% of the global fisheries workforce, especially in pre- and post-production activities.

Crystallization properties and structure of Panulirus interruptus haemocyanin [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Biochemistry, 1989
Electron‐microscopic studies revealed that two types of subunits of Panulirus interruptus haemocyanin crystallize in different ways. Homohexamers of subunit a give close‐packed two‐dimensional crystals whereas homohexamers of subunit c form open two‐dimensional arrays.

The metabolic underpinnings of temperature-dependent predation in a key marine predator

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2023
IntroductionChanges in temperature can fundamentally transform how species interact, causing wholesale shifts in ecosystem dynamics and stability. Yet we still have a limited understanding of how temperature-dependence in physiology drives temperature ...

Marine Protected Areas That Preserve Trophic Cascades Promote Resilience of Kelp Forests to Marine Heatwaves. [PDF]

open access: yesGlob Chang Biol
Marine protected areas (MPAs) are key management tools which can help to foster climate resilience of ecosystems during and after large‐scale marine heatwaves. Specifically, when MPAs protect California sheephead and spiny lobsters (urchin predators that are fished), these predators can consume more urchins, and in turn the remaining urchins eat less ...

Spectroscopic investigations of Panulirus interruptus hemocyanin in the crystalline state [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Biochemistry, 1989
Single‐crystal ultraviolet spectroscopy, X‐ray absorption spectroscopy and EPR measurements have been used to examine the oxidation and oxygenation state of the dinuclear copper site of several types of hemocyanin crystals. The crystals contain Panulirus interruptus hemocyanin which forms hexameric molecules with a molecular mass of approximately 470 ...

How can we measure resource quality when resources differ in many ways? Deconstructing shelter quality in a social fish. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
Resource quality is an important but difficult‐to‐quantify concept in ecology and evolution. Here we generate a comprehensive picture of the characteristics that contribute to the attractiveness and quality of shelter resources used by Neolamprologus multifasciatus, a group‐living cichlid fish.

True insights or ticking boxes? Rapid assessment of rights‐based management in artisanal fisheries

open access: yesFisheries Management and Ecology, Volume 30, Issue 4, Page 338-352, August 2023., 2023
Abstract Rights‐based fisheries management (RBFM) seeks to create market incentives to reduce competition, avoid overexploitation, and increase economic efficiency. Particularly for artisanal fisheries, however, assumptions of RBFM may not be met and its use needs to be carefully considered. This study applies an existing tool (SEASALT) to evaluate the

Primary structure of hemocyanin subunit c from Panulirus interruptus [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Biochemistry, 1992
The amino acid sequence of the hemocyanin subunit c from the spiny lobster, Panulirus interruptus, has been determined. The elucidation was mainly based on three digests, with CNBr, trypsin and endoproteinase Glu‐C, respectively. Additional evidence was obtained by sequencing of peptides from an endoproteinase Lys‐C digest.
