Pathology of Pheochromocytoma and Extra‐adrenal Paraganglioma

Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 2006
Abstract:  The 2004 WHO classification of endocrine tumors defines pheochromocytoma as a tumor arising from chromaffin cells in the adrenal medulla. Closely related tumors in extra‐adrenal sympathetic and parasympathetic paraganglia are classified as extra‐adrenal paragangliomas. A pheochromocytoma is an intra‐adrenal sympathetic paraganglioma.

Extra-adrenal pheochromocytoma (paraganglioma) in a cat

Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 1990
Extra-adrenal pheochromocytoma (paraganglioma) arising from periadrenal tissue was diagnosed in an 18-year-old spayed domestic shorthair cat. The tumor was palpable on physical examination, but not apparent on plain radiographs. The cat developed temporary cardiac arrhythmia while the mass was being handled during excision, suggesting that the tumor ...

Metastatic Extra-Adrenal Sympathetic Paraganglioma in a Horse

Journal of Comparative Pathology, 2010
Post-mortem examination was performed on a horse that died after exhibiting signs of colic. Gross findings included haemoperitoneum and a large round encapsulated mass located in the sublumbar area cranial to the left kidney. On sectioning the mass was solid red to brown and small nodules of similar tissue were noted at the periphery of the mass.

Immunoreactive somatostatin in catecholamine-producing extra-adrenal paraganglioma

Cancer, 1982
A patient with catecholamine-producing extra-adrenal paraganglioma was found to have a high concentration of immunoreactive somatostatin (IR-SRIF) in the peripheral blood plasma (47.0 pg/ml, normal; 13.3 +/- 5.3 pg/ml, mean +/- SD). After removal of the tumor, the plasma SRIF level fell within normal range (8.7 pg/ml).

Asymptomatic extra-adrenal paraganglioma masquerading as retroperitoneal sarcoma

Clinical Journal of Gastroenterology, 2009
A 41-year-old man without clinical symptoms was referred for treatment of an enlarging retroperitoneal tumor. Enhanced computed tomography showed a well-defined and heterogeneously enhanced tumor, 4 cm in size, in the dorsal portion of the pancreas. A low-density nodule was detected in the left adrenal gland, 10 mm in diameter.

Canine chemodectoma (extra‐adrenal paragangliomas)‐a comparative study

Journal of Small Animal Practice, 1975
ABSTRACTSixty‐seven cases of chemodectoma in dogs (fifty‐nine aortic body, two glomus pulmonale, and six carotid body) were studied. The epidemiology, biological behaviour, and association with other tumours of canine and human chemodectoma were compared. The large number of sites of origin of human chemodectomas was not observed in the dog. The canine

Multiple extra-adrenal paragangliomas associated with catecholamine cardionn opathy

European Heart Journal, 1989
We describe a patient with multiple extra-adrenal paragangliomas who presented with clinical features of a dilated cardiomyopathy. Hypertension was not a major feature of the illness despite excessive catecholamine secretion by the tumours. Following surgical resection the changes of dilated cardiomyopathy did not regress on echocardiography and the ...

Non‐functional malignant extra‐adrenal retroperitoneal paraganglioma

Australasian Radiology, 1995
SUMMARYA case of malignant non‐functional extra‐adrenal retroperitoneal paraganglioma is presented. The mass was located in the peri‐renal space, simulating a renal cell carcinoma. The radiological and pathological findings are discussed.

Paraaortic Extra-Adrenal Paraganglioma: Challenging Robotic Resection

Annals of Surgical Oncology
Up to 41% of intra- and extra-adrenal paragangliomas are linked to germline mutations with autosomal dominant transmission, which necessitates genetic testing for patients and their relatives.1-4 Certain alterations, such as the succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) subunit B gene mutation, are associated with a significant risk of extra-adrenal, malignant ...

[Non-secreting, extra-adrenal retroperitoneal paragangliomas].

Archivos espanoles de urologia, 2002
Two cases of extra-adrenal non-secretory retroperitoneal paraganglioma in male patients are presented. The first case had intermittent vascular claudication in lower limbs and the second one was an incidental finding during staging of a lymphoma. Both cases were studied using imaging techniques (US, CT and MRI) and histological and immunohistochemical ...
