Parametric Statistical Models

open access: yes, 2021
Now that we have introduced probability models, we have the tools we need to put our statisticians’ hats on. We want to make a probabilistic model that best describes the world around us. How is it that we can best move from our set of observations to a good model—a model that not only describes our samples, but the process that generated them? In this

Robust estimation on a parametric model via testing

open access: yes, 2016
We are interested in the problem of robust parametric estimation of a density from $n$ i.i.d. observations. By using a practice-oriented procedure based on robust tests, we build an estimator for which we establish non-asymptotic risk bounds with respect

Time after time – circadian clocks through the lens of oscillator theory

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Oscillator theory bridges physics and circadian biology. Damped oscillators require external drivers, while limit cycles emerge from delayed feedback and nonlinearities. Coupling enables tissue‐level coherence, and entrainment aligns internal clocks with environmental cues.

Head and Neck Sarcoma Assessor (HaNSA) for treatment decisions using real-world data

open access: yesESMO Real World Data and Digital Oncology
Background: Head and neck sarcomas (HNS) are rare and diverse cancers with distinct biology, unique treatment constraints and poor survival outcomes. Furthermore, HNS are understudied in Asians, and prospective clinical trials are untenable.

Finding Structural Information of RF Power Amplifiers using an Orthogonal Non-Parametric Kernel Smoothing Estimator

open access: yes, 2015
A non-parametric technique for modeling the behavior of power amplifiers is presented. The proposed technique relies on the principles of density estimation using the kernel method and is suited for use in power amplifier modeling.

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Parameterizing the seasonal–diurnal wind climate of Rome: Fiumicino and Ciampino

open access: yesMeteorological Applications, 2020
This study uses the Offset Elliptical Normal (OEN) mixture model to parameterize the seasonal–diurnal wind climate of Rome, Italy, for engineering design purposes, and also to reveal the physical meteorology of this “mixed” wind climate.

Local Nonlinear Least Squares Estimation: Using Parametric Information Nonparametrically [PDF]

open access: yes
We introduce a new kernel smoother for nonparametric regression that uses prior information on regression shape in the form of a parametric model. In effect, we nonparametrically encompass the parametric model. We derive pointwise and uniform consistency

Semiparametric response model with nonignorable nonresponse [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
How to deal with nonignorable response is often a challenging problem encountered in statistical analysis with missing data. Parametric model assumption for the response mechanism is often made and there is no way to validate the model assumption with ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...
