Ships are mainly built to sail and transport cargo at sea. Environmental conditions and state of the sea are communicated to vessels through periodic weather forecasts. Despite officers being aware of the sea state, their sea time experience is a decisive factor when the vessel encounters severe environmental conditions. Another important factor is the

Head-wave parametric rolling of a surface combatant
Ocean Engineering, 2010Complementary CFD, towing tank EFD, and nonlinear dynamics approach study of parametric roll for the ONR Tumblehome surface combatant both with and without bilge keels is presented. The investigations without bilge keels include a wide range of conditions.

Ship Stability and Parametric Rolling
Australasian Journal of Engineering Education, 20091 INTRODUCTION The stability of ships is of vital importance to the maritime world, and for a variety of reasons is likely to become even more important in the future. For example, ships in general are becoming ever larger, and a growing number of cruise ships have more decks above the waterline, potentially raising their centre of gravity and ...

Real-Time Identification of Parametric Roll
Journal of Ship Research, 2022_ The International Maritime Organization (IMO) provides criteria to assess the vulnerability of ships toward the phenomenon of parametric roll. Such long-term vulnerability assessments permit to qualify statistically the ships vulnerability regarding parametric roll.

Detection of Parametric Roll for Ships
2011Recent years have shown several incidents with dramatic damage on container vessels caused by parametric resonance. When the resonance starts, the roll oscillation at a sub-harmonic frequency of the wave excitation may be completely unexpected. Timely warning about the onset of the resonance phenomenon could make the navigator to change ship’s speed ...

A nonlinear model of parametric rolling stabilization by anti-roll tanks
Ocean Engineering, 2009The present paper describes a mathematical model in which the fluid motion inside a U-tank is nonlinearly coupled to the heave, roll and pitch motions of the ship. The main purpose of the investigation is centred on the control of roll motion in the case of parametric resonance in longitudinal waves.

Probabilistic Properties of Parametric Roll
2011The chapter considers statistical properties of parametric roll; the source of data is numerical simulation of parametric roll of a C11 class container carrier in head seas. The characteristics considered include estimates of spectral density, autocorrelation function. Special attention is paid to uncertainty of estimates of mean value and variance.

Trimaran Vessels and Parametric Roll
2011Parametric roll can occur in case of trimaran vessels, in particular when the outriggers have limited draught and/or limited transversal separation. Due to the significant nonlinearities of the restoring moment and due to the often complex shape of the metacentric height in waves for this type of ships, parametric roll clearly shows quite peculiar ...

Parametric Roll and Ship Design
2011The variety of vessels which can suffer from parametric roll is large. It has been observed on small fishing vessels sailing in following waves but also on large cruise and container vessels in head and following waves. The occurrence of parametric roll, with high roll angles, is governed by a complex combination of main dimensions, loading condition ...

Parametric Rolling of Ships – Then and Now
2011Modern research on parametric rolling of ships was first conducted in Germany in the late 1930s. This work was initiated in an effort to explain the capsizing of some small ships such as coasters and fishing vessels in severe following seas. The work included experiments with models in open water as well as numerical and theoretical computations.
