Alternating rolls in non degenerate optical parametric oscillators

Journal of Modern Optics, 1996
Pattern formation near threshold in large-aspect-ratio optical parametric oscillators with flat end reflectors and uniform pumping is investigated in the non-degenerate case. By deriving amplitude equations describing interaction of four orthogonal traveling waves, it is shown that, contrary to the degenerate case, a pure standing-wave pattern is ...

Nonlinear and stochastic aspects of parametric rolling modeling

2004
This paper addresses, starting from an extensive series of tests in longitudinal regular waves (already done) and irregular waves (in progress), the problems connected with the threshold formulation for parametric rolling and its amplitude modeling above threshold.

Evaluating Roll Damping in Parametric Rolling: Challenges and Approaches

The prediction of parametric rolling in ships remains a critical area of research due to the significant impact on maritime safety and vessel performance. Among the various parameters influencing parametric rolling, roll damping is notoriously challenging to assess due to its nonlinear nature.

Parametric Simulation of Rolling Contact Fatigue

ASME 2008 Rail Transportation Division Fall Technical Conference, 2008
Simulations of dynamic vehicle performance were used by the Wheel Defect Prevention Research Consortium (WDPRC) to explore which track and vehicle variables affect wheel fatigue life. A NUCARS® model was used to efficiently examine the effects of a multitude of parameters including wheel/rail profiles, wheel/rail lubrication, truck type, curvature ...

Experience from Parametric Rolling of Ships

2011
This chapter reviews three recent full-scale events with parametric rolling for Ro–Ro Large Car and Truck Carriers (LCTC). The events represent three principally different modes of parametric rolling: principal parametric resonance where the period of encounter is half of the roll natural period in following seas (I) and in head seas (II), and ...

Estimation of Parametric Roll in Random Seaways

2011
This chapter attempts to provide a guideline for quantifying the magnitude of parametric roll of a ship in irregular seaways. First, in the light of physical model experiments with a scaled ship model in irregular water waves, it is shown that parametric roll of this ship model is a practically nonergodic process.

ALGORITHM FOR ESTIMATING THE PARAMETRIC ROLL MOTIONS

International Journal of Modern Manufacturing Technologies
For a ship, both synchronous and parametric roll motions can be modelled by nonlinear second-order differential equations with the roll angle as dependent variable and the nonlinearities coming from the damping and restoring moments. In the absence of exact solution techniques, approximate solutions for such equations can be obtained, in principle ...

Probability of Parametric Roll in Random Seaways

2011
The aim of the present chapter is to advocate for a very effective stochastic procedure based on the First-Order Reliability method (FORM) and Monte Carlo simulations (MCS), for prediction of parametric rolling in stationary stochastic seaways. Due to efficient optimization procedures implemented in standard FORM codes and the short duration of the ...
