Unique Dynamics of Paramylon Storage in the Marine Euglenozoan Diplonema papillatum
Protist, 2020Diplonemids belong to the most diverse and abundant marine protists, which places them among the key players of the oceanic ecosystem. Under in vitro conditions, their best-known representative Diplonema papillatum accumulates in its cytoplasm a crystalline polymer.

Crystal transition of paramylon with dehydration and hydration
Carbohydrate Polymers, 2010Abstract The structure of paramylon, a highly crystalline (1 → 3)-β- d -glucan material, was analyzed by synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction and solid-state 13 C NMR spectroscopy. Native paramylon, the hydrate with high crystallinity, was converted into the anhydrous form by drying, by which the crystallinity decreased and the molecular ...

Thermal expansion behavior of hydrate paramylon in the low-temperature region
Carbohydrate Polymers, 2013The thermal expansion behavior of hydrate paramylon between 100 and 300K has been investigated using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. The X-ray diffraction profile at 300K showed a typical pattern of the hydrate triple helical (1→3)-β-d-glucan with a hexagonal unit cell (a=15.782Å and c=18.580Å).

Preparation of Paramylon Multifilament by Using the Viscose Method
ChemistrySelect, 2022Abstract The feasibility of preparing a novel wet‐spun multifilament derived from paramylon‐a linear β‐1,3‐glucan‐is investigated in this study. The decomposition temperature of the paramylon multifilament (∼300 °C) exceeds that of a wet‐spun cellulose one (∼270 °C).

Stress resistance induced by paramylon treatment in Artemia sp.
Journal of Applied Phycology, 2004A study was undertaken to investigate the effectiveness of paramylon extracted from the non-photosynthetic WZSL mutant of Euglena gracilis in potentiating the resistance of the brine shrimp Artemia sp. to stress conditions resulting from poor growth medium quality and daily handling.

Synthesis, properties and molecular conformation of paramylon ester derivatives
Polymer Degradation and Stability, 2017Paramylon, which is a β-(1,3)-D-glucan photosynthesized by Euglena, was chemically modified by esterification. Various paramylon triesters with different alkyl chain lengths (carbon numbers 2–12) were successfully prepared. All of the paramylon triesters have higher thermal degradation temperatures than that of neat paramylon.

PARAMYLON SYNTHESIS IN HETEROTROPHIC AND PHOTOHETEROTROPHIC EUGLENA (EUGLENOPHYCEAE)1
Journal of Phycology, 1980ABSTRACTGrowth of Euglena gracilis Klebs in medium containing DL‐lactate as sole carbon source results in the synthesis of large quantities of paramylon at the beginning of exponential growth. The accumulation of paramylon grains in the cytoplasm is observable in both dark‐grown and light‐grown cells.

(1→3)-β-d-Glucan nanofibers from paramylon via electrospinning
Carbohydrate Polymers, 2014(1 → 3)-β-D-Glucans of paramylon from Euglena gracilis were dissolved in concentrated formic acid and electrospinning was conducted using a newly designed setup. The diameter of the as-spun fibers ranged from 0.05 to 1 μm, and most of the fibers were straight and aligned parallel to two arbitrary fins (electrodes).
