Rescue of a Vaccinia Virus Mutant Lacking IFN Resistance Genes K1L and C7L by the Parapoxvirus Orf Virus

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2020
Type 1 interferons induce the upregulation of hundreds of interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs) that combat viral replication. The parapoxvirus orf virus (ORFV) induces acute pustular skin lesions in sheep and goats and can reinfect its host, however ...

Genetic and Antigenic Heterogeneity of Different Parapoxvirus Strains

open access: yesIntervirology, 1980
Six stomatitis papulosa and three Orf virus strains were compared by serology and by DNA restriction analysis. A neutralization kinetic study revealed extensive serological cross-reactivity between all strains, but did not allow their classification. Restriction analysis of viral DNAs revealed two distinct groups among the stomatitis papulosa strains ...

Orf parapoxvirus infection from a cat scratch

open access: yesDermatology Online Journal, 2011
A 53-year-old woman presented with an enlarging, tender, ulcerated nodule on her dorsal hand after being scratched by a stray kitten. Histology was consistent with orf parapoxvirus infection. The lesion resolved without scarring after several weeks of treatment with imiquimod 5 percent cream. Orf is a zoonosis transmitted to humans from sheep and goats

Molecular Characterisation of Orf Virus in Goats From Eastern Türkiye

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 12, Issue 4, July 2026.
This study provides the molecular characterisation of Orf virus (ORFV) strains circulating in Türkiye. Phylogenetic analysis of F1L, B2L, and VIR genes reveals high genetic similarity with Asian and global isolates, highlighting the importance of multi‐gene analysis in monitoring viral outbreaks and understanding disease origins.

Therapeutic Poxviruses Induce the Secretion of Immunostimulating and Anti‐Tumoral Extracellular Vesicles

open access: yesJournal of Extracellular Vesicles, Volume 15, Issue 6, June 2026.
Immune cells infected by therapeutic poxviruses release increased amounts of extracellular vesicles bearing viral proteins and therapeutic payloads. Such EVs have the ability to activate a CD8+ T‐cell mediated antitumoral immune response and decrease tumor growth.

Recovery of the first full-length genome sequence of a parapoxvirus directly from a clinical sample

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
We recovered the first full-length poxvirus genome, including the terminal hairpin region, directly from complex clinical material using a combination of second generation short read and third generation nanopore sequencing technologies.

Infection Risk From Humans and Animals in the Anatomy Laboratory: A Scoping Review

open access: yesClinical Anatomy, Volume 39, Issue 3, Page 346-367, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Whole‐body dissection is a cornerstone of anatomy education. During and following the COVID‐19 pandemic, exposure to infectious agents and other risks of dissection were highlighted. To identify potential risks, one must have the data outlining these risks in specific situations.

Hematological and biochemical evaluation of goats naturally infected with contagious ecthyma [PDF]

open access: yesThe Iranian Journal of Veterinary Science and Technology, 2018
Contagious ecthyma (CE) is a zoonotic skin disease of small ruminants, caused by an epitheliotropic parapoxvirus and has a worldwide distribution with significant economic importance.

Zoonotic Poxviruses Associated with Companion Animals

open access: yesAnimals, 2011
Understanding the zoonotic risk posed by poxviruses in companion animals is important for protecting both human and animal health. The outbreak of monkeypox in the United States, as well as current reports of cowpox in Europe, point to the fact that ...

A viral infection usually seen after feast of sacrifice: Human orf, in this case accompanied with erythema multiforme

open access: yesMedicine Science, 2018
Orf is an infectious disease caused by an epitheliotrophic double stranded deoxyribonucleic acid parapoxvirus which primarily affects sheep and goats but humans can also be infected by contact with infected animals.
