Developmental expression of Ap‐Vas proteins in aphids and flies reveals their evolutionary roles in insects

open access: yesInsect Molecular Biology, EarlyView.
Duplication of vas genes is universally observed in aphids, and phylogenetic analysis indicates that this event predates the divergence of Aphididae and Phylloxeridae. Ap‐vas1 is germline‐specific, whereas Ap‐vas2–4 exhibit somatic expression, indicating functional divergence during aphid embryogenesis.

Genome‐wide and gene‐specific DNA methylation across developmental stages in Pogonomyrmex californicus: A socially polymorphic ant

open access: yesInsect Molecular Biology, EarlyView.
Comparison between developmental stages (larvae, pupae, worker) in Pogonomyrmex californicus revealed significant stage‐specific differences in Gene Body Methylated frequencies. Methylation sites were highly correlated between WGBS and ONT in P. californicus Genome‐wide methylation was low (~3%) and highly clustered within gene bodies (GBM), especially

Determining Terminal Velocities of Selected Insects and Substitute Materials to Develop Future Test Procedures for Insect‐Friendly Mowing Technology

open access: yesJournal of Applied Entomology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Agricultural grasslands are vital habitats for insects that provide key ecosystem services. However, conventional rotary mowers are proposed to cause significant insect mortality due to the high rotational speed of their blades and the resulting airflow.

A survey of natural parasitism of mirid bugs by parasitoids on apples and pears in Norway [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Mirid bugs are important pests in both integrated and organic fruit production. In a survey in 2006 the proportion of mirids parasitized by parasitoids was investigated in 18 Norwegian orchards.

Natural Increases in Parasitoid and Predator Abundances and a Shift in Species Dominance Point to Improved Suppression of the Sorghum Aphid Since Its Invasion into North America

open access: yesInsects
Melanaphis sorghi (Theobald) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), commonly called the sorghum aphid, is an invasive pest of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) (L.) in North America. It was first observed in 2013 along the Gulf Coastal Plains ecoregion of Texas, Louisiana (USA)
