Selective paraspinal muscle amyotrophy
A 56-year-old female presented with mild low back pain. Examination revealed severe, selective atrophy of the thoracic and lumbar paraspinal muscles. Fibrillations were seen in the paraspinal muscles on EMG. Limb EMG was normal. Biopsy of the gluteus maximus was normal. Paraspinal muscle biopsy revealed neurogenic features.

Quantitative electromyography: Normative data in paraspinal muscles
AbstractBackgroundQuantitative electromyography of paraspinal muscle is a valuable diagnostic tool, but normative data are lacking.MethodsNeedle electromyography (EMG) was obtained in 65 healthy subjects (49% men, 51% women) aged 21 to 82 years at C7, Th10, and L5 segments bilaterally.

Paraspinal Muscles and Intervertebral Dysfunction: Part One
One of the diagnostic characteristics of the manipulable spinal lesion--a musculoskeletal disturbance detected by manual palpation and corrected with manipulation--is said to be altered segmental tissue texture. Various manual therapy authors have speculated on the possible nature of this tissue change, with some authors hypothesizing that it ...
