Pathology and Morphometry of the Paraspinous Muscles in Nonidiopathic Scoliosis
Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics, 1987The muscle fibers in 19 patients with nonidiopathic scoliosis were generally small, especially on the concave side of the curve. Type 1 fibers were more frequently atrophic than type 2 fibers, but the former usually remained larger than the latter.

Fibrillations in lumbosacral paraspinal muscles of normal subjects
Muscle & Nerve, 1998Although paraspinal muscle fibrillations and positive sharp waves (PSWs) are used to help identify neuromuscular disorders, the frequency of these abnormalities in normal subjects is uncertain. We performed lumbosacral paraspinal electromyography in 65 normal subjects.

Medial paraspinal muscle electromyography: Techniques of examination
Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, 1993We describe two techniques, developed through cadaveric dissections, for the electromyographic examination of the lumbar interspinal muscles and medial lumbar multifidi. Previous anatomic studies have indicated that these medial paraspinal muscles share unisegmental innervation by a single nerve root.

Paraspinous muscle flap for the treatment of an empyema cavity
Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery, 2012For the reconstruction of defects localised near the midline region of the back, there have been occasional reports of reconstruction using a paraspinous muscle flap; however, to the best of our knowledge, there have been no reports of empyema space reconstruction using a paraspinous muscle flap.

Paraspinal Muscle Imbalance in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis
Spine, 1984Twelve muscle biopsy samples were taken at operation for spinal instrumentation from each of seven patients suffering from idiopathic scoliosis (one male and six female patients; mean age 14.3 years). The samples were collected from two specific sites (superficial and deep) on both sides on the vertebral column at the level of the apex of the primary ...

Effect of Electrical Stimulation on Lumbar Paraspinal Muscles
Spine, 1993Forty healthy, sedentary, premenopausal women were entered into a randomized, single-blind, controlled study to determine the effects of capacitively coupled electrical stimulation on the strength of the lumbar paraspinal muscles and the bone mineral in the lumbar spine. All were between 35 and 45 years of age and had normal physiologic estrogen.

Paraspinal Muscles and Intervertebral Dysfunction: Part Two
Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, 2004One of the diagnostic characteristics of the manipulable spinal lesion--a musculoskeletal disturbance that is claimed to be detected with manual palpation and corrected with manipulation--is said to be altered segmental tissue texture. Little evidence for the nature of abnormal paraspinal tissue texture exists, but indirect evidence from experimental ...
