Paraspinal Muscle Atrophy After Lumbar Spine Surgery
Orthopedics, 2016Paraspinal muscles are commonly affected during spine surgery. The purpose of this study was to assess the potential factors that contribute to paraspinal muscle atrophy (PMA) after lumbar spine surgery. A comprehensive review of the available English literature, including relevant abstracts and references of articles selected for review ...

Rehabilitative Ultrasound Imaging of the Posterior Paraspinal Muscles
Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy, 2007Interest in rehabilitative ultrasound imaging (RUSI) of the posterior paraspinal muscles is growing, along with the body of literature to support integration of this technique into routine physical therapy practice. This clinical commentary reviews how RUSI can be used as an evaluative and treatment tool and proposes guidelines for its use for the ...

Effect of Electrical Stimulation on Lumbar Paraspinal Muscles
Spine, 1993Forty healthy, sedentary, premenopausal women were entered into a randomized, single-blind, controlled study to determine the effects of capacitively coupled electrical stimulation on the strength of the lumbar paraspinal muscles and the bone mineral in the lumbar spine. All were between 35 and 45 years of age and had normal physiologic estrogen.

Fibrillations in lumbosacral paraspinal muscles of normal subjects
Muscle & Nerve, 1998Although paraspinal muscle fibrillations and positive sharp waves (PSWs) are used to help identify neuromuscular disorders, the frequency of these abnormalities in normal subjects is uncertain. We performed lumbosacral paraspinal electromyography in 65 normal subjects.

En bloc laminoplasty without dissection of paraspinal muscles
Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine, 2005Object. Although conducting cervical laminoplasty in patients with multisegmental cord compression provides good neurological results, it is not without shortcomings, including C-5 palsy, axial neck pain, and undesirable radiologically detectable changes.

Severe paraspinal muscle involvement in facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy
Neurology, 2014In this study, involvement of paraspinal muscles in 50 patients with facioscapulohumeral dystrophy (FSHD) was evaluated using MRI.The Dixon MRI technique was used in this observational study to quantify muscle fat content of paraspinal and leg muscles. Muscle strength in the neck, back, and legs was assessed with a handheld dynamometer.

Paraspinal Muscle Vasculature Contributes to Posterolateral Spinal Fusion
Spine, 2006Study of posterolateral fusions in a rabbit model. To characterize the contribution of paraspinal musculature to the healing of posterolateral spinal fusions in a rabbit model.Previous studies have demonstrated that successful spinal arthrodesis requires vascular ingrowth from adjacent decorticated bone.
